New variety of 1944 Lincoln DDO cent attributed!

sumduncesumdunce Posts: 1,247 ✭✭✭✭
The coins from my previous thread have been attributed.

I have found a new variety of doubling for the 1944 Lincolns.image

Here is the important part of the email from John Wexler:
*******************************************
I have done the attribution of your coins. All five coins are the same variety. The good news is that it is a new listing to the Wexler Doubled Die Files. The variety is listed as 1944-D 1c WDDO-017 showing doubling on the TY of LIBERTY, the last T of TRUST, and the date.

Doubling that you see on Lincoln's profile is master hub doubling that can be found on Lincoln cents spread over quite a few years in that era.
*******************************************

I am assuming the "1944-D" is a typo in the email and was meant to be "1944"

As of right now there are only five known examples and they are all owned by me!image

Does anyone have any idea what these coins would be worth? I have already had an inquiry for purchasing one.

Thanks.

Edited to add:
This variety will be one of the coins featured in the 20 June edition of Coin World under the Varieties Notebook column. image

That's cool that you have discovered a new variety. Sorry, I can't tell you what there worth. It depends on how many of that new variety are out there to be found.

Yeah, I'll say! I got really excited when John Wexler mentioned that he may use the photos of the coins for an upcoming Coin World article.

I know that these varieties are not worth too much but I felt very good to know that this variety escaped discovery for over 60 years until I stumbled across it.

The funny thing is I got the BU roll these came in by mistake. I bid on the wrong auction and won. Later when I was looking through the coins I took out the best looking coin and was going to submit it. Before I was going to send in the submission I was giving each coin (one of these coins and some others that I did submit) a closer look to be sure I did not miss any contact marks and noticed the last T in TRUST appeared doubled. I could not find the variety of the coin so I pulled it from the submission. I gave all the coins a closer look and found four more which I subsequently put in 2X2s and dumped them in my error coin box. A few years later someone on a thread here had mentioned getting a coin attributed and I remembered these coins.

And the rest is contained in these threads.

The five are on their way to ANACS to get graded with attribution (hopefully designated with "Discovery Piece" annotated on the tag).

I can't wait for them to return.

I don't know much about Lincoln cents either, but the old saying "Even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while" comes to mind here.

It just took this "squirrel" 25 years (length of time I have been actively collecting coins) to find my first.
