New Trade Dollar with TONS of Chopmarks... high up on the coolness scale!
I just got this one today... It's an 1874-CC, but there's a chopmark opposite the CC, so it's VERY hard to see. The closeup is the best I could do (the large one is a little blurry because the camera was so closely focused that a tiny movement blurred it).
Anyhoo, I hope you like this one--I think it's really cool

<< <i>Very cool, Jeremy! Can you give some history on the purpose of the chopmarks? >>
As far as I know, this is why they were used:
Trade dollars were made specifically for trade with the orient (hence the name)--they're heavier than morgans (27.22g vs. 26.73g), though they're of the same fineness (.900). When they reached the orient, they were checked to be sure they were true trade dollars, as opposed to plated counterfeits. Chopmarks were used to dig into the metal and see if it was truly silver or not. For each port/location the dollar may have gone, a new mark was used specific to that area. Basically, this dollar really travelled around.

PS- There's some irony that now most of the trade dollar counterfeits come from China

Actually, they were assayed at the port either by specific gravity [or perhaps more destructive tests] and then the mark placed upon the surviving coins. For the most part it's just a myth that the chops took a bit of silver.
