R&I bay

It looks like Rick Tomaska is going to give eBay a run for their money.

You can list your coins for sale and pay about the same as eBay. So far only one taker.

I see he added to the already uphill battle by using a black background with blue text, making the site an eyesore.

  • Very tough to read, for sure. I'll bet it's changed within a week or two!

I wonder why it takes so long to change? The person doing it, or the ones proofing it, have to know it is a pain for others.
Legend finally changed theirs and I commented to Laura about it months ago.

Just changing background/text is NOT that big of a deal...........

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

  • Thanks for the link. I am going to snipe the 1958 quarter in MS-66 that is currently up for auction. imageimage

This is hilarious. Not to bag on Tomaska, but COME ON! A hard to read site, that has not been established, with very low traffic (compared to eBay), with a comparable fee structure to eBay. Whatever he's smoking, I want some! image
  • Aside from the atrocious colour scheme.....he has a damn good idea that is going to take business away from ebray if he holds true to keeping the crap out.....ie......keeping overseas coins that don't exist off. Taking and policing the crap will create a solid foundation for an online auction site that doesn't require the "juice" that other online auction houses have.

I'd give them a break. After all, this only proves that intelligent coding needs superior front end user friendliness.

Just a little work on the front end could make this site quite valuable. All I can say is that you got to start somewhere and this set up looks like a good foundation on which to build something spectacular for collectors and dealers alike.

  • I agree that we can't bag on a guy for trying. You gotta admire entrepreneurship, right? However, I think that Rick is screwed right from the beginning due to some copyright violations. His "BuyNow" is to close to Buy It Now that eBay has rights to. I recall reading about several big law suits that emerged when a whole sea of copy-cat online auction companies tried to duplicate what eBay was doing. Most, if not all, are out of business now. I could be wrong. Also, eBay probably won't do anything unless and until R&I Auctions starts doing a larger volume of business. The only way I think that his auction site will make it is if he reaches critical mass in terms of registered users (mostly viable bidders). To do so, he will need to advertise extensively.

Maybe ebay has a copyright on the pleasing white background.
  • Changing text and backgrounds are actually a much bigger deal than you think. The auction site itself is written primarily in PHP, imbedded in which are module that pull information from an SQL database. I have been playing with these modules and PHP code for a couple of weeks, and am just now becoming fairly fluent, and understanding where to find things to change them.

Also, as for the copyright issue. Well...we will find out soon enough I imagine. But I actually purchased most of the "in auction" art from the vendor itself, so I doubt there is an issue there. I will look into this however, and report back to you all if you like.

Another thing that needs to be mentioned here is that we are not in competition with Ebay. If we were, we would be allowing alot more than just coins and numismatic material. Also, we wouldn't be near as selective. We are two separate entities, and I think you will find that we run in two very different directions. The big problem that I have seen with ebay is that they are too big to filter out the nonsense. At least now a member can easily contact the administrator here and some action can be taken with a bit more speed. Also, someone had mentioned the overseas fraud aspect. We, being smaller, can catch these things quite a bit easier.

And lastly, as for the "pleasing" white background. I have to spend my life staring at a computer screen. Over the past year or so I have been developing severe headaches and migraines. After a while, I have found that darker backgrounds with lighter text seems to be easier on my eyes, and seemed to reduce the frequency of headaches, etc.. Now I admit that the blue REALLY sucks, and thanks to some wonderful coding, it has been a real bear to locate all the little things that need to be changed. All in all, I think we have a strong foundation, and I will be developing this according to everyone’s suggestions.

Please understand, there will be issues. This is a brand new site, with a huge lifetime of development ahead of it. I am going to rely on many of your suggestions (as long as they are made in a constructive way) to head this development.

    OK, off my soapbox.

Alex, in case you are not already aware of them, you or Rick might want to address some of the questions/complaints directed at R&I in this thread?:
