Will you be able to whisper in the President's ear about redesigning our coinage or be able to find out if there will be a Reagan coin? What's it like living with all the world leaders at Sea Island Georgia? Are you picking up any darkside stuff ? Maybe you can't even get on the computer due to securityimage Inquiring minds want to knowimageThanks--------BigE

The G8 leaders are staying at (and around) The Cloister on Sea Island. My wife works there. She saw Dubya the day before yesterday, planting a tree. And Jacques Chirac, today.

I work for the same company, the Sea Island Company, but I work at a sister resort, The Lodge at Sea Island Golf Club, (which is actually on St. Simons Island- it's kind of a confusing name). We are much smaller, with only forty-two rooms, but it was an interesting night.

We have no less than three presidents and two kings staying with us tonight! And I served Room Service to one of each (one president and one king). Didn't get to see the king we served- just his bodyguards, but I personally served dinner to one of those presidents tonight. There is more Secret Service and law enforcement and military around here than you can shake a stick at. Tonight as we were walking out along the Avenue of Oaks, waiting for the last shuttle bus to pick us up, I joked that you probably couldn't throw a pebble into the bushes without hearing somebody say "ouch". One of the cops nearby (who was one of 200 or so from Atlanta) smiled knowingly, and said I was probably right.

I don't think I am allowed to tell the identities of the presidents and kings we have as guests right now. But they are not from G8 member nations. All I'll say is that they are all from primarily Islamic nations. They might even mention which countries on CNN. Since they are all Muslims, we had to deal with the dietary restrictions (like no pork, for instance), and we had to pull all the liquor out of the bars and minibars, and so on. It was a wild and wooly night.

In my 17 years in the Room Service biz, I've served a few movie stars and celebrities, a governor, several senators, and a US Supreme Court justice, but tonight was a first. A president and a king in the same night. (Actually, we in Room Service had a little bit to do with stuff that went to the rooms of all three presidents and both kings, so indirectly, I could say I "served" them all).

Was it dinner fit for a king? I can only hope so! The sad fact of the matter is, our regular guests get much better service than we gave tonight- we were stretched pretty thin. And, who woulda guessed- these royal and presidential guests tend to be a little teeny bit high maintenance! image I think we pulled it off OK, though.

Neat story. Very interesting, and sounds like a high pressure situation!

BigE- in answer to your first question- yes, I certainly could have whispered into the President's ear tonight, but I don't think he would have liked it much- he had his back to me, and he was on the 'phone when I was setting up his dinner. And I don't think this particular president could have done much about US coin designs. image
