New to Board & ? about 20th C Type Collection

I've been reading the threads here for a couple of weeks and finally decided to join. I have been enjoying the interesting and informative topics. Things sure are lively around here ! image

I am new to collecting and have started with the 1999+ silver proof sets and a 20th Century Type Collection (27 coins, no gold). It has been recommended to me to "buy quality", so my preliminary goal is to collect specimens in MS60+ conditon (but with most MS65+ when affordable). My monthly budget is $75-100, so I was planning on choosing coins in the $50-$150 range for the most part. I would trend toward slabbed coins (PCGS, NGC, ANACS) since I am not yet confident in my MS grading capibilities and because I will getting alot if not most of my coins from online stores or auctions. I would love some opinions/advice/tips on my current plan. The page below shows what I have so far (4 are slabbed).

My Coins (Small pics on the page with links to large images).

While we're at it, please let me know what you think of the pictures (taken with digital camera / home-made stand / natural light).

I look forward to being a part of this forum, as it is a great source of knowledge!

Dave

P.S. How to I upload an icon to use?

nice coins and good pictures. As a fellow 20th Century Type collector I think you have made a good start. Two points:
    (1) your coins vary from high AU to gem which is a rather wide varation, you may want to narrow your focus to have a closer matched set.
    (2) Don't rush, coins purchased just to fill a hole can be a problem as your taste and knowledge increase. I found out the hard way "fillers" tend to be expensive since they tend to be replaced later.

Good luck and remember"it your collection so it only has to please you!"

    Dan,

Thanks for the advice. The "BU" unslabbed coins on the site are quasi-filler, I guess.
(I paid $4.00 or less for each and might or might not replace them with higher-grade specimens in the future).

I admit is hard at this point to be patient for quality over getting quantity (and immediate gratification).

    Dave-

Type collecting is where it's at, man. So much better than date collecting, as a type set is much more interesting to the eye.

Speaking of which, I really like the way you did your page. image

When you finish that 20th century set you need to go back to the 19th!

In answer to your icon question, you have to have an image saved on your computer which is no greater than 100 X 100 pixels and 10 KB in size. Then, on the 15th of each month, if you click "Profile" you will see an upload box below where you normally pick your icon. Upload is only enabled on the 15th.

If you wanna use one of my coin icons in the meantime, feel free. I'm not using them right now. There's a 2-cent piece and a Barber half, among others. Just sold the 2-cent piece. I'm gonna miss it. image

Dave, welcome and good start on the board. Nice Pics!
My advice echoes some of the previous thoughts. Don't be in a hurry. Be selective and remember that there are alot of coins out there. You're better off saving a bit and waiting to buy one really nice coin rather than several lower grade or more common items.
Keep at it and let us know what's up!

Welcome from one type collector to another!

That is a great webpage. The pictures are very good and the layout is nice. That should help you stay focused and organized. I'm surprised that neat looking steel cent is only MS 63, it sure looks neat.

As to advice I agree with fullerfun that patience is important. It is expensive to upgrade. It is fun to look for coins. Many of the mistakes I've made were due to lack of patience. Learning some patience has helped me in other aspects of my life.

Welcome. The nice thing about collecting type is that it may steer you into a series that you like that you didn't realize.

Thanks to all for the welcomes and the advice.

The web site was a quick attempt at some sort of organization/presentation of my collection as it grows. I am probably going to experiment with some different formats for it. I think the pics are probably a bit large at the moment and I wonder what organizing it to use frames would do.

Carl, thanks for the comment about patience. I find the idea that collecting is a good way to practice patience a very interesting idea. You have some nice type coins for sale on your web site which I will certainly consider for my collection.

LordM, thanks for the comments as well. I actually lived in Brunswick for 7 years when I was growing up. Are you a dealer and have a shop? I still take some day trips up there occasionally when I am visitng my parents in Jacksonville. I'll use your Barber Half icon until I can upload something on the 15th. It beats a red X. Thanks.
