Paging PCGS.....

I've seen many posts now with issues with turn-around time on submissions. Personally, If I had to wait 100+ days for a coin to come back to me (even if I opted for the 60 day submission) I'd be very upset. Consider your hard earned investment sitting on the shelf at PCGS at the very moment your sector begins to lose value. You wouldn't be able to do anything about it but watch it lose money day in and day out. PCGS would need a new phone system as some collectors (speculators) would want their coins back yesterday....

If PCGS has problems now, think about the issues they will have in the situation above. I'm not saying everyone has issues with turnaround time. I think the amount of posts here reflect a very small % of PCGS's problems. But still, it is an issue and a concern for some of us here. When a company grows, their systems and resources need to grow with it (management 101). So my question to PCGS is:

1) What % of submissions are completed within the alloted time frame? I would think 95% would be a low goal to start with. I assume you chart this and use it as an annual review bullet for each dept. head....
2) What do you have in place or will be putting in place to make sure submissions are completed on time?
3) What will you do to make sure that this type of problem never happens again?

Your response is appreciated.

The Q&A forum would be a good place to post this.

I just did my 8 free Platinum Member submissions and they were exactly 30 days.

If he actually wants an answer from PCGS, the Q&A forum is the appropriate place. It's luck of the draw for someone from PCGS to spot it here.

OTOH, if the goal is simply for discussion purposes so we can all sit around and whine about the turnaround times, than this forum is as good as any.

    My 2¢ worth.

At the FUN, I took a submission to the PCGS booth. I was greeted by a pleasant young lady who looked at my order and determined I had used the wrong size flips. She handed me the correct size, and wrote up my order. When she saw my name, she recognized it and introduced herself. It was BJ Searles. She took time to chat. While we chatted, a dealer employee walked up to check on a submission. The order was ready, but PCGS wouldn't release it to anyone but the dealer. The young lady looked flustered, but one of the PCGS folks picked up the order and walked it across the bourse to the dealer. Not bad.

I submitted two orders to PCGS last month, one 15 day, and one modern. They were entered into the system on 12/16. I figured with the show the orders would be mid-month. Today I called, and instead of the "Well what do you expect, you did send it economy and you're not a dealer" I got last year, I got "Mr.Heath, your coins were received 12/16, and unfortunately due to the FUN, you still have till Friday under the 15 day guarantee. You should expect them then." It's obvious to me that PCGS has had conversations about CS and its impact.

Do I wish it turnaround were quicker? Sure, but I don't think that's the real issue. I think PCGS would fare just as well to publish current estimates of turn-around, and forgo a guaranty for all but the most expensive tiers. If your submissions are coins to add to your collection, what's a few days. If your submission is for resale, you're putting it in PCGS plastic because that's what you believe your customer wants. The wait is secondary.

I submit to NGC/PCGS/ANACS, in that order, but as I listen to the conversation on the board I thought it was worth posting my experience.

We'll, in a very related way, the matter was already raised and he did answer:

  • TTQ&A..........
  • My advice? I'd post this in the Q&A.
This forum is quite busy and if your intention is for David to see it, you never know where this will be on the page when he does check in.
I don't know how often during the weeks David stops by but he does read the Q&A on Tuesdays.

Been there, seen that. Coin Market crash in the Fall of 1989.
  • Well.... I posted to the Q&A forum but as most of you know.... David has to approve the post before it actually gets put up in that area.... so TTT for now.
  • I still don't think anyone has beaten my 181 day turnaround economy submission batch.

The process engages all the hidden forces of economic law on the side of destruction, and it does it in a manner which not one man in a million is able to diagnose."
