Is MS70 a dip, or not?

1jester1jester Posts: 8,637 ✭✭✭
It says on the bottle that it is NOT a dip. I just wanted your opinion on this. Does it remove that proverbial layer of "skin" on a coin? They claim it has no acid, so is it a dip or not? Does it damage the coin or not?

This thread is in keeping in line with the prevailing threads about toning/dipping, etc.

My understanding is that it's more akin to soap than dip.

So if it's a strong base it's not a dip and if it's an acid it is? I don't think so. It's a dip IMHO and, specifically for copper, just as harmful.

Not all soap is basic. Perhaps it would have been more accurate to refer to it
as an emulsifier. It gets under a contaminant and loosens it.

If you don't *dip* your coins in it then it's not a *dip* is it?
It doesn't remove any "skin" like acid based cleaners that are commonly called *dip* does.
Like cladking said <<<It gets under a contaminant and loosens it.>>>
That means it will remove some kinds of toning as well as grunge.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.
  • MS70 is NOT a dip. MS70 is a highly concentrated soap that was originally made to be put in golf ball washers at the golf course. If you just "dip" your coin in MS70 nothing will happen, it needs to be gently applied and rubbed on the coin with a Q-tip to remove the crud on a coin. MS70 does not strip away any metal like Jeweluster or other dips, so it doesn't impair a coins luster. It's usually only used on higher grade mint state or proof, silver or nickel coins. It makes copper look weird.

I don't think it is a "dip" although it is a strong cleaner, as its suppose to be non-acidic. I have used it on unc silver w/ no bad effects. It cleaned up the surfaces of dirt and left the luster and toning. I used it on an brown unc bronze Indian Head cent and it ruined it. It made it look like a brand new modern day Lincoln cent. It did not have the look as if you dipped it in Jeweluster, but it just had a different kind of look. This stuff does affect toning on copper/bronze coins even though it claims to be safe. Maybe their meaning of safe is it doesn't remove the metal like the other dips. I recently asked about MS70 on this board and I believe someone replied saying it did remove the "skin" of copper.

It certainly seems to act like a dip. I've never used it on copper/bronze, and I never will, but on silver it has removed the toning from the trial pieces I've subjected to it. It has done remarkably well at removing dirt and other crud, and sometimes that crud was attached to the surface of the coin, so what was left was a coin that looked like it had been etched. That was with some coins that had been sitting in a cacao tin for decades, and the cacao had left some serious stains on the silver. MS70 removed all of it, but the surfaces looked etched where the stains had been. On other coins, I couldn't discern any damage at all, leaving a brilliant coin with visibly perfect luster.

MS70 will make your coins bright as new and that is a bad thing.
Every mark that was hidden by dirt/oil will show brightly.

Your better off let things as they are without cleaning.

depends on the specific coin. some pieces are definitely better off with a little help, others are best left alone. When in doubt, I would post a pic on here and ask for opinions before hazarding a "treatment"

"dip" generally refers to the use of a "thio-" solution to remove tarnish (ez-est, jewelluster, etc)

I think use of water (the universal solvent), acetone (the solvent for oily stuff), and various soaps (ms70, etc) can be called for, depending on what contaminant is afflicting the coin in question.

good advice, no matter what subject you're talking about image
