Whats the biggest variance you've ever seen submitting the same coin (raw) to PCGS?

I had a coin come back as an XF45 (which was ridiculous), cracked it out and it was called AU53 (which is in the ballpark) the second time.

About 2 weeks ago a friend cracked out an attractive AU53 coin hoping for an upgrade and it came back, really, as VF25.

I am not making this up.

I've never heard of an AU coin coming back in such a low circulated grade upon a resubmission. That's nuts! What coin was it?

  • It was a Connecticut colonial coin, which, due to vagaries of strike and planchet can be difficult (and controversial) for even knowledgeable colonial collectors to assess.

Lets just say that it isn't a PCGS specialty.

And that was just while you owned it! image

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

I pulled a 1939-S Jefferson out of a partial roll and sent it to PCGS via regular service. Came back as AU-58. Cracked it out and sent it economy and now it's in a MS 65 FS slab. Kinda makes a guy wonder................

  • I had a coin come back in a body bag. I had a dealer talk to PCGS and resent it in. It came back 66dcam second finest known. A few of my coins had never been graded and when they were PCGS probably felt they were too good to be true. I was a little happy!

  • Humans grade them.... Humans make mistakes. A machine has no common sense, somewhere there has got to be a balance. I would guess that when it gets graded to what you feel is fair then leave it alone.

    Dragon -

    I'd go for the 67 if I were you - you're on a roll.

I have a clipped 1915-S cent in a PCGS EF45 holder which was purchased (on eBay) by a major dealer in an old ANACS cache graded MS61BN. I assume he cracked it to submit it to PCGS. (I remembered the coin because was the underbidder on the original auction)

I also recall a certain Bust Dollar going from PCGS EF45 to NGC AU50 to PCGS AU58, though I doubt it was cracked between submissions. image

"...had one common date Morgan get 4 different MS grades from PCGS......65, 65PL, 66, and 66PL."

If the coin is a borderline 65/66 with surfaces that are almost proof-like, I could see this happening.

    HOWEVER...

"...cracked out an attractive AU53 coin hoping for an upgrade and it came back, really, as VF25."

This last quote is hard to believe. It certainly gives credence to the opinion that PCGS does not grade Colonials very well.
