In this era of counterfeit TPG slabs,

will it become increasingly important where your slabbed coins come from? Is it expected that dealers will guarantee that both the coin and the slab are authentic?
As an aside, all of the examples of counterfeit slabs I have seen have been silver dollars (Bust and Trade). Do you think that these areas of the market may suffer as folks decide to avoid taking chances? Are there some areas that are more likely to be immune from this practice? For example, is collecting southern gold, a relatively esoteric area, safer than collecting Trade dollars at this point in time?

I think the modern coin market will get hit the hardest. The vast majority of fake PCGS slabs that i've seen for sale firsthand have been US gold, silver and platinum eagles; most graded PF/MS 70, but some were 69s. The quality of the "coin" was very impressive, and would fool many i'm sure.
As more of these flood the market, i think you'll see ebay sales fall for these products, as new collectors are unable to tell the real from fake.
Honest question and interested in the answers. I thought the number on a slab was unique and registered.

Yes but the countifieters use exitisting cert numbers so when you look it up it checks out ok.

<< <i>Maybe it is time for the TPG's to establish a data base as to owns the slab at any time. If gets sold just log in and register it. Not sure if that is practical or even possible, just a thought. >>
The apparatus for this is already available with the registry. If everyone enrolled their coins in the PCGS registry, for example, this database could be useful. Whenever anyone would buy a PCGS certified coin, they would punch in the cert #, and only complete the transaction if the coin does not belong to someone else (or the coin can be verified to currently owned by the seller). This would require both buyers and sellers to be compulsive and vigilant about registering and deregistering their coins. For people who own and/or handle a large volume of coins, this might be cumbersome. Just a thought.

This would only be possible with PCGS coins enetered into the current registry.
BTW, please post pictures of these "US gold, silver and platinum eagles; most graded PF/MS 70" that you've seen. Better yet, the next time you see one, grab a picture and share.
The name is LEE!
Thanks for the answers

pictures? i'm not buying fake coins for the sake of buying them. However, Condor asked me to pick one up the next time i go to the swap meet. A friend owns a swap meet here in the Phoenix area, and I go occasionaly on Saturday morning to get out of the house. They have one vendor in particular that sets up two to three full tables of fake PCGS graded bullion fakes. I've also seen the same in stores in Beijing the last time i was there; they are really cranking these babies out! (along with fake Brits, Kooks, Pandas, and Philharmonics)
