It is an incredible collection of raw silver Roosies. This is a perfect example of buying "coins" and not holders and a close example to the raw Stacks/Commem thread posted here last week as these coins commanded 20x their regular price for wonderful quality and color. And, a clear example of buying RAW "moderns" for what they are, irrespective of holders.

Frank: Yes, I lot viewed the coins and now own the coins. There are a handful of coins in the collection that are among the nicest color examples of those particular dates I have ever come across. Monster rainbows. I was relieved to see no picture of the coins on the site, as the bidding would have possibly gone far higher. We'll see how they slab out.
From my experience, the Goldbergs always put on an interesting auction with plenty of deals for collectors.

Wondercoin, Sounds like a wonderful purchase. I (Frank too) would love to see some images. If they look anything like this raw one below it was a super find. Congrats.

A friend of mine looked at the set and the report that I got back was that these were some of the prettiest Roosies he has ever seen. Unfortunately there were very few that had full bands, The ones that did were common date coins and none of the keys were full bands. This set had to have sold at those numbers just for the color. At least thats the report I got......
Mitch, I would love to see those beauties when you get them......
"Nick: Do the common date MS68FB silver Roosies have much value these days?"
Mitch, They have great value. My report said no MS68's in the group. Of coarse like PCGS, My report was a subjective view. One 68FB in the set and you have a winner. Either way I think $2K was a good price for the set. Let me know how it turns out........
Nick: I will. I know your contacts are top of the line, so I'll keep my fingers crossed. Now, if only Frank would consign his raw collection of silver Roosies to auction!!!!!

Back when these coins actually were a little common back in the 1970's they were an incredibly difficult set to assemble in high grade. One had to look at lots of mint sets and BU rolls and both could be problematical. One rarely encountered more than a handful of the silver sets at a time. With effort the later dates could be found in some larger quantities but the earlier double sets were much harder to locate. BU rolls were around but few dealers would allow you to just open them up and check for gems. There were no graded coins and no internet to search for them. The best bet in those days was to check dealers' stocks but most did not stock large numbers of common dimes. Those who assembled these sets had a great deal of motivation and generally spent quite a bit on costs of looking at coins. Very few of these sets ex- ist simply because of he huge effort required for such "common" coins.
There's been a great deal of water under the bridge since the mid-'70's and everything is far different now for these coins. Many of the rolls have been broken up by variety and gem collectors. Many of these BU rolls were very handy in dealers stock in 1980 and were simply tossed in with the coins to be melted. The mint sets have gotten much far- ther along in their disappearing act.
Today many of these coins do actually still exist in their original condition but people are discovering that their original condition just isn't always that great. Very few top grade sets are in existence except for some formed recently and usually in slabs. (or busted out of slabs)
It's great to see people finally paying attention to these coins after nearly sixty years. It's also great that this is a design that's still being minted so that there is another link between the old and the new.
To all those searching these coins; Happy hunting!
A gorgeous set that I spent probably 30 minutes viewing alst week. Especially appealing was a 1949S and 1953S both of which were the finest looking Roosevelt dimes I have ever seen. I also sat thru (and bid) today at the auction and the bidding was very spirited to say the least! My 2 cents for what its worth was there were perhaps 5-7 superbly toned MS67's in the set and probaly that many again MS66's that rank equally high on the color scale but slightly lower on the grade scale. But I will say that if PCGS adds a point for color, a few of those coins could find their way into some pretty uncommon grade plastic!
Congratulations Mitch - a superb set and the nicest I've had an opportunity tio sight see (probably the 2nd nicest set I've ever seen behind the set our own board member Tonelover has on his website but I've never seen that one in person but boy would I like to!).
Lablover, that one heck of a Roosie but pales in comparison to some of the coins in that set - a TRUE color lovers set!
Craig If I had it my way, stupidity would be painful!
Craig: I appreciate the post. Yes, the 53(s) and 49(s) were absolutely incredible, but, I believe the most desireable dime in the collection was probaby the 47(s). We'll see what PCGS does with it. Interestingly, just as I started lot viewing the raw Roosie collection, I was sitting next to Tonelover from our boards who was just packing up to head out for the night. We spoke briefly about his dime collection.
Like I said, between the Goldberg and Superior auctions there are always tons of collectors coins. In fact, Sunday morning, the entire first session of Superior's auctions was devoted to the "Collectors Coin" session. Long Beach will have basically 5 major auctions this time, not to mention the minor auctions such as the Bullet sale, Kingswood, etc.

This must be a great set, if the key coins don't grade as you want, just plug them back in the album and the set will always be worth what you paid for it. Thumbs up Mitch-----------------BigE

Now I'm confused.
New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
Mitch, NONE of these coins is eligible for the showdown!! Constitution has an "ex post facto" clause!! Congratulations, I was drooling just thinking about the Goldberg description!

That's funny I saw in these coins in person and there are several that are stunning. Someone viewing the lots said that he thought they go for about $1200. The lady from the security service that was handing out the lots (a very nice 60ish black lady with probably no real numismatic experience) though they sell for over $2000.
Strange, but she was right on. I wonder if Mitch told her how high he go!

Wouldn't the "whole" be worth more than individual coins in this respect??? "
This dime set was purchased with the intent to slab a few nice coins. The bid I had on the collection was for "raw coins" - no slabs involved. We have heard on this thread from a number of Roosie enthusiasts that they did not see an MS68FB in the collection and I certainly respect their comments - hence, my comment "we'll see how they slab out". Is there something inconsistent about this?

Claus, Not even close. If just one of these beauties grades MS68FB it will sell for multiples of what the entire set sold for. Get a half dozon to slab out at MS67 and you just made your money back. Get a few of them to go FB and and your into profits. The whole is very rarely if ever worth more then its parts.

It's raw but I would give it a solid MS67 and just may go MS68. Not a FB however. Can't wait to see your pics.
