Knowledge comes in handy.
Paid $15 (back when 1940 nickels could be bought for that), went PCGS PF67.
Ike Specialist
Finest Toned Ike I've Ever Seen, been looking since 1986
Most Expensive from circulation: Montana 1960--1895S Morgan in AU, 1937D 3-legged bison, XF/AU.
Most Recent from circ.-- 8 red/brown 1909-P VDB's as change at estate auction 2004--not expensive, but what do you want for 8 cents---
I've cherried a number of undergraded coins that I've flipped for nice money...of course to turn over into another purchase! Do those count?

I have a few other coins I consider more important.
<< <i>Today my most valuable cherrypick is probably an MS-67 '76 tI Ike. >>
OK! Now I'm Jealous!
The name is LEE!
An 1888-O Hot Lips Morgan I pick up at the local coin shop that ended up grading XF
An 1880 Knobbed 8 Morgan I picked up off of eBay that graded AU although it has been ever so lightly cleaned

I'd say that's the winner so far. Any pictures?
New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

i thought a cherry pick was a coin that was misattributed not a coin where the cherry is a piece of plastic around it??
as you break the coin out of the holder and it loses its cherry pick appeal and price!!

Posts are based on experience and are opinion only. Experiences and opinions of others may differ.
The largest spreads I've seen between what a dealer sells the coins for and what they pay (if they buy them at all) is on 50 or less year old coins that are common as coins go (hundreds of thousands to hundreds of millions extant) but are in high grade and sold accompanied by pieces of paper and plastic.

Another attempt at derailing a thread he doesn't like because it concerns moderns.

I was thumbing through a bunch of Liberty nickels from 1900-1912 and stumbled across one with a "1913" date.
Found 6 1959 Cameo Franklin proofs in orinigal sets grading from Proof 66 Cam to Proof 67 Cam...
Bought a 1936 proof buffalo as an MS coin (paid $55), graded proof 65 satin...
Found a 1936 DDO cent... unc, cleaned, net au...
but the big one was a 1836 Gobrecht dollar... discovered when I asked a friend to donate his collection to a charity... as we researched the dollar, it turned ou to be on of 3 known judd 63 RES... graded Proof 62. Sold for $98,900 in a Heritage auction in 2000. My friend donated all the money to the charity. That was fun.
Your friend has a lot of integrity. Kudos to him. I wonder how many others would have done that once the coin was identified.

Any idea what the Jeff's go for and who might be interested?

Cool. It's long been my dream to find modern patterns misattributed as tokens or medals. I've actually found a couple of darkside patterns but no US.
I also cherrypicked one of these from a $4 box of cereal and sold it for $1800 earlier this year:
My EBay Store/Auctions
The last few years I started sending them to PCGS a few at a time.
Out of 54 that were sent in I received these grades.
4- MS65
46- MS66
4- MS67
Someone took a lot of time putting this box together.
I'm thankful I'm the one that got to take it apart.

You can on rare occassion find small lots of mint and proof sets like this. I suppose
most were part of an estate and neither the heirs nor the dealer knew what they had.
Not bad for two or three cents. ('Twas in a batch of common Wheaties I bought... here on the BST Forum!)
and they're cold.

5c 1920-S as AU on a bid board at a local shop about twenty years ago for $100. It now is in a MS 63 holder in my PCGS registry set.
1c 1922 plain die #2 as XF 40 NGC for $1450. Immediately cracked it out and sold it for $2400 (two years ago). It was an AU for sure.
1c 1915 for $9 as an AU. It's in a MS64 RB holder now.
20c 1875 as XF for $170. It's in a 55 holder.
5c 3-legger as XF for $325 about ten years ago. It's in a 58 holder in my registry set.
From raw coins I "made" a 1c 1947 MS 67, 5c 1931-S, 35, 35-S, 36, all in 66, and a 5c 1936-D and 37 both in 67... Registry set!
on and on and on...
It's the best way to fund newps!
