Great thinking!!! Mike, if you or Dave get the chance, post some pictures of your booth setup. I'd especially love to see the unopened section.

Your unopened stuff should do well!! Makes me want to go just for that. I'm only 4 hours away

I asked Steve today when I paid for my group break if he would be there and he said no, too busy to set up. To my knowledge BBCE only sets up at the National. I'll definitely be stopping by to see what 70's and early 80's are there for sale. Got to have something to bust in the hotel room after the show Saturday!

For those of you still looking to get to the show, you want to definently look for this table. Some very cool older rack packs for sale, nice 70's and 80's full boxes and cello/wax packs. I bought a killer 80-81 Topps (Magic/Bird Rookie year) Wax box with the BBCE seal intact and a number of 77 and 78 Topps cello packs, both baseball and football.
Good luck with the show, Gentlemen. I am looking forward to doing more business with you again, soon.

Just send me a PM or email me for discount off eBay pricing. Thanks
I hope to read more!
These 2 guys made me feel very welcome, and were both very happy to meet me when I introduced myself. I will never forget that.
I ended up purchasing 2 very nicely wrapped 1980 topps baseball cellos and they will go into my unopened closet!
I will be back on Saturday.
Thanks guys for a great time. Paul.
Later, Paul.
A bunch of board members dropped by and it was really awesome to see them. Paul (Stooge) pulled a Henderson RC from a 1980 wax pack he picked up somewhere else in the show. Not a PSA 9/10, but still a thrill for all of us. Also saw Arik, Tyler, Jeff from Cardcountry and a few others (a lot of people were coming by while we were setting up and looking/trying to do deals...NOTE TO SELF: Next time come earlier and be set up ahead of time as the "set up" day is ripe for doing big business and finding great deals).
I'm posting pictures below for all to enjoy. But first some background info. About a year ago Mike and I came up with a concept that it would be really great if we could create a "virtual collection" so that we (and others) could be part owners in things that we just couldn't afford on our own (e.g. a PSA 8 1952 Topps Mantle, high-end vintage unopened, etc.). We formed an LLC called Virtual Hobby Partners.
It operates as a for-profit partnership, such that as we find great items that are "special" we add them to the collection and if they can be sold for a profit then we end up with more funds to buy other great items. If not, then we enjoy them in the collection and wait until they find a buyer (we are putting up a web-site with high-res scans to keep things commerically available, while having a private access area for partners to log-in and get better scans, messaging, etc.).
The collection remains in a safe/secure location for most of the year, but we intend to make annual trips east, west and central to bring items geograhically close to groups of partners so that they can actually hold/see them in their hands. We'd have some sort of board/steering committee meeting monthly to help set directions on what people would like to add to the collection.
The concept is still under development, but we have been adding some serious items into the collection to get things seeded (hence some of the vintage unopened from 1972-1975 and some higher-end singles and card groups that you will see in the photos below). As it matures we'll let the board know in case anyone is interested.
So back to more of the show report. Trying not to make this commercial, so instead of listing what is still available I'll provide some of the "what sold" and more good stories from today.
Notable items that sold today included:
A PSA 10 1986 Fleer Basketball Jordan Sticker
A 1982 Topps Cello Box
A group of 200 or so 1963 Topps PSA 8s
1972 Topps PSA 8.5 559 Rose and PSA 7 595 Ryan from the recent 1972 Topps Wax Box BBCE break
1971 Topps Blyleven RC PSA 8
1963 Topps PSA 8 Clemente
1963 Topps PSA 8 Banks
1975 Topps Mini PSA 8 500 Ryan
And, tomorrow my old friend Steve (orbitdoc here) the autograph nut is joining us to add some of those outrageous vintage BB and FB autographs I scanned for all to see and enjoy a few months back.
The biggest draw and "buzz" is the vintage unopened. A lot of people coming by and asking about it (we had an offer by someone to write us a personal check for a 1972 wax box series 5/6 and a 1975 rack box that we just couldn't take the chance on it being rubber). A lot of disbelief that all of this was at the Sun Times show, as it usually only appears at National. Even Dave & Adam came by and were checking out things and comparing to their own lists (though I think they usually are working with material that is a bit newer).
Best "unopened" story of the day was we pulled 3 1973 Topps Series 2/3 racks at random to put into the display case (figured we'd use the same random approach to offering them that BBCE does so that we could legitimately say they were not searched). A guy comes over and asks to look at them. Then he tells us we need to charge a premium on one of them because it has Nolan Ryan showing on the back!
Up until that moment we didn't have an inkling. NOTE: We set that rack aside with a new premium price, but if the guy who found it wants it at the original asking price we will honor it for him.
We'll be at it bright and early Saturday. And if anyone has any idea of how to price a complete 1984 Topps football set made from 3 uncut sheets, we'd love some input (we got a little from Steve Hart already). Also a 1980-81 Baskball uncut sheet (Bird/Johnson rookie year). We're operating a bit out of our element on these items.
Hope to see more board members during the rest of the show! BTW, that's Mike. We'll try to post a few more pix over the weekend.

Thanks for the comments, and man was it busy from 5-9 while opened Friday night. A lot busier than I ever expected. I think we have a great location too.

<< <i>I just got word from John that the Nature Boy Ric Flair auto's came out great!!! >>
I was leaving the Embassy suites through the back where the parking garage was and I was standing right next to a silver haired guy in a dark suit. I didn't notice it was Rick Flair until I went to leave. When I finally did notice, I had to take a double take. By this time, we were both outside and I waved at him at said HI. He smiled and waved back and got into some Honda SUV with another dude and a young brunette.
I could have kicked myself for not at least shaking his hand and going WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I will post a pic of my Ricky Henderson RC in a little while.

The Express, Little Luis and Dirt! I love it.
So is there a PSA 9 Tyson RC and a 62 Mantle #200 for sale? If so drop me a PM-- looking for both cards. Mantle in any grade really long as it's centered well. Thanks.
I would be ripping packs at your booth all day if given the chance.

No pictures today, but here's the major happenings for the day:
Got to the exhibit hall around 8:05AM. Took out most of our stuff the previous night so we had to re-setup for the day.
Had a little help from Randy Cook who is at the table next to us. He has a locking bag on his table, so we were able
to leave the run of 70s and 80s boxed baseball and football sets in the exhibit hall safely overnight and just move them
back to our table when we arrived. MANY THANKS RANDY! (NOTE: Randy is a specialist in Babe Ruth and other historic
Yankee items. He has some BEAUTIFUL stuff for anyone who is interested).
Everyone started streaming in to the exhibit hall at 9AM. Traffic was pretty heavy for the first few hours. Most people
were checking out all of the tables first before returning to the tables that had things they were really interested in.
We had quite a few smaller sales to start the day, with several inquiries about bigger ticket items from people who
returned later after they had a chance to scope out everything.
A representative of one of the significant auction houses came by and asked for pricing on many of the high-end singles
we are displaying. He was "shocked" that we would ignore SMR and use VCP in its place. He said no one used it. I had to
beg to differ, as Bobby is doing a fantastic job keeping current market data from Ebay and practically all of the major auction
houses at our fingertips on a moment's notice. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK BOBBY. As if SMR has any chance of keeping
current on population premiums and current market movements....
The rep in question suggested I visit his table, as he is pricing based on SMR and claims he is significantly lower than our
numbers. Will report on that experience tomorrow or Monday.
Many visits from board members today. Enjoyed meeting everyone and talking about the show, card stories of the past,
putting cards in our bike spokes and all sorts of topics that just flowed into the conversations.
Items that moved today included:
- Several batches of 72 high numbers to fill want lists
- Several people picking up 1971 Topps coins to fill their want lists (one guy bought a Clemente for $5 and then came back
30 min later asking to return it because he said he didnt have any money left for cab fare...like you can get anywhere in
Chicago in a cab for $5 these days! I let him return it (ultimate destination of that coin later in this update).
- A bunch of 1972 empty wax boxes
- 1958 Clemente yellow-letter variation in PSA 8
- 1969 Lew Alcindor RC PSA 6 (badly under-graded, but well over VCP for a 6)
- 1968 Bench RC PSA 9
- 1969 Mantle (yellow name) PSA 8
- 1978 Topps BB vending box
- Quite a few unopened packs (story below on 1 of them)
- A rabid autograph collector spent the better part of an hour picking about 50-60 baseball autographs
- Several difficult and high-end OSU-related autographed gum cards (Horvath, Janowicz)
- Some low grade pre-war inlcuding W502 McGraw and 34 Goudey Cochrane
One of the board members picked up a 1975 OPC unopened wax pack and ripped it. Pulled a sweet Bench that we all oohed and ahhed
about!
Story of the day. About 40 min before the show closed for the day a father and his two kids (boy 7-8 and girl about a year or 2 younger) came up.
The little guy asked for a price on a loose 1993 Topps Jeter RC that was in the case. He clearly didn't have a lot of money, but the way his nose pressed up
against the opened case glass, it was clear that he was longing for that card. We sold it to him for $1 and told him that we wanted to give him a great start
into a lifelong love of collecting. His dad was very, very appreciative. He wanted to spend a few bucks on something to say thanks, so we ended up giving him
the 1971 Clemente coin that was returned for cab fare earlier and a few other mid-grade 71 toppos coins (Munson, Jackson and Bench).
The young man was absolutely over the moon...but what to do about the young lady? So I asked her what kind of things did she like. We have a bunch of original
1999 pokemon packs and cards that I suggested but she replied, "nah...I like Yankees..." So we dug out a late-model Arod and a late-model Jeter from the dollar box
and gave them to her as a "show special". The way her eyes lit up was definitely the true "special".
Day 3 and final recap to follow. Hope to see more of you Sunday!
