So a dude from Cali calls my buddy & offers him a PSA 10 Jordan RC, PSA 9 Aaron RC & PSA 8 C

Tells my friend he got his number off of Craigslist. He supposedly has a PSA 9 Aaron Rookie, a Gem Mint Jordan RC, and a PSA 8 T-206 Cobb. He says they belonged to his dad and he inherited them and needs the money, so he is willing to take $15K for all three of them. He claims he just wants to dump them because he doesn't have time to go to an auction house and wait for funds.

Originally he told my friend he wanted him to deposit the money in escrow.com (WTF is that?) but now he is willing to meet him in person and do an exchange.

How many red flags are there here? My buddy is emailing me the scans but I am beyond skeptical.

    which Cobb? image

nobody........i said NOBODY leaves that kind of money on the table.....the Aaron would be worth significantly more by itself.

    just sayin'.

The Aaron is a Craigslist fake. I'm sure the others are too.

Your friend should have the guy meet him in the lobby of PSA during their next Public Friday.

    Obvious fake flip
The #s are too close together, almost touching.
None of the PSA flip variations have #s that close together
And the bar code starts to the left of the lettering, that's a bad attempt
  • There was a thread on net54 last week about the same 3 fake cards.
  • Any chance it's this guy?

So he inherited the cards from his Dad and they are in PSA slabs? This guy got them graded supposedly? He would know the value of such items if he was smart enough to get them graded.

I bet one of the following scenarios would take place-

1-Its a simple exchange and the guy is just hoping to sell these fake cards
2-He will get jumped, beat down and robbed
3-He will get robbed at gunpoint

Only a fool would consider going through with this.

    From Net 54..

    -------------------------------------------

So first of all he's been banned but could creep back in. Nothing he has written is that terrible it's really more immature than anything else. And since this idiot that can't spell wants to have a little hunt lets start out with this contact information and see where we can take it. Of course with subpoena'd records we could go to his ISP and find out for sure but unless he does something really bad that won't happen...but he registered on October 19, 2009 with this info:

    username vintage classiscs
    name Edwin Arroyo
    phone number 561 372 2329

    edwin20099@yahoo.com

and the initial email upon registration was this information....no different but the more the merrier.....I will be speaking with the FBI today about this too...just to get some thoughts....

I would never entertain a solicitation from a stranger who claims to have gotten my

info off the internet, and then has all these high dollar cards for me. What? Am I special?

A person could sell those cards to any reputable dealer (of course they would have to actually have them)

Vito - he's not an alt. He's a scammer pure and simple. He got booted off Net54 (where the name he gave on registration was Edwin Arroyo - spelled different ways in different places), and his ISP that he used to register there comes back to Tijuana, Mexico. The name is likely fake.

The San Diego County area of California (just across the border from Tijuana) has been a hotbed of identity theft as well as collectibles scams, because it's easy to get money in the U.S. and then cross back into Mexico, which has little interest in cooperating with U.S. law enforcement on cross-border crimes.

Please stay away. I recently almost got scammed from a Mexican Ebay seller with 0 feedback. I knew better than to bid on his auctions, but they were so professionally looking with front and back scans, with the same color background, I just KNEW he had the cards....also in a separate incident, had my credit card # stolen, and the perp took a trip on Jet Blue from NY to FL on my dime. Last name? Spanish/Latin American........seems to be a rush of Spanish crime lately.....

vintage classics = like every other community, noone wants to get cheated. There are some hardworking, honest people on here (myself included). For someone to want to cheat someone out of $15+ large, takes alot of gall. These users are very informative and will help to protect someone from getting cheated. Now, please take your fake cards and destroy them.

Many on this board are true experts, and the fact of the matter is that MOST things are scams when it comes to wax, high dollar card "deals", and incognito sellers. It's just the way it is.

    Steve

    Good for you.
  • I would never trust someone that approaches me unsolicited with a 'bargain' on anything... whether door to door, via the internet, over the phone, or at the mall. It's Snake Oil as far as I'm concerned if you have to search a buyer to give them a 'deal'.

If the bargain were real, they could easily sell on the open market, especially on something like the high end vintage collectibles market. There are plenty of reputable resources they could go through to get more than their bargain prices if their deals are legit.

I guess that's why most of us buy from Steve Hart at a premium rather than Joe Schmoe for a 'deal'
