Another pay cut...best way to move cards?

Hey guys. More continued anxiety because I got paid today and received another pay cut. This really stinks. I hope that this interview on Sunday goes well.
Anyway, I was to preface this by saying I'm not posting cards here on this thread. I'm not trying to sell cards here, so please save the criticisim for some other time I really don't need it right now.
I'm going to go through and pick out my favorite players and team (the Indians) from my collection and let everything else go.
What is the easiest, quickest, most profitable way to sell all the rest off. I know that there will be time that has to be invested in doing this, but ebay doesn't seem to be cutting it.
Any serious suggestions. I really don't need any pithy comments today, so if we could keep this one to a serious nature that would be great. Thanks guys.

Sorry to hear that. Try listing stuff on the B-S-T boards here. It's free and only takes a few minutes. You probably won't sell everything but you'll get a few bites.
  • Maybe try to set-up shop for a weekend at a local card show. Price aggressively and you should be able to move a ton of inventory. Since it doesn't seem like you have any super high dollar cards or collection, Ebay is the best way to move smaller lots.

If you have any Philadelphia Athletes, Rickey Henderson or NBA Cards (pre-1990 and/or Signed HOFers) I would be interested in helping take some off your hands.

  • PM me if you have any Ozzie Smith or Champ Bailey cards.

    Good luck with the interview!

  • And I'd be willing to take any Red Sox stuff off your hands if the price is right.

Good luck on the interview this weekend.

  • I'm assuming that selling off the small amount of vintage if have would be a first. Then I guess the game used and auto cards next?

prioritize what you like the best, and sell that last. this could be a temporary down turn for you and you'll regret selling your favorite stuff

I don't see why you prioritize your sales (vintage first, etc...). Just put EVERYTHING up on the Bay ASAP.

Game used cards typically have very little re-sale value unless you have a Babe Ruth or someone of that ilk. The prices realized on modern players is just too variable, and most of the time the GU guys at my local card shows have everything at half off book and are willing to deal even further from there.

I am not even a big Red Sox fan, but I picked up a "triple" UD Yaz GU for 2 bucks a month ago. You may have better luck with the autographs if they are of popular players or rookies.

I would be interested in your vintage material.

  • Sorry to hear about your job situation. I hope that things will turn around soon for you.

As to your question, I don't think one methods really covers all of your requirements. Easiest, quickest, & most profitable will end up contradicting each other regarding sales methods. The most profitable would probably be ebay, especially for the vintage stuff, but that's not the quickest or easiest imo. Quickest is probably to list in the BST forum here (like others have suggested). That also seems like it would be easy, although I have not personally done any business through there. Another person mentioned that ebay is good for small lots of cards. I agree with that, but realize that you probably won't get as much as if you sold the cards individually (again, easy and somewhat quick, but not the most profitable). I think that the card show suggestion is also valid if you really want to get rid of a big chunk of it at one time (for lower prices of course). Good luck!

  • What about signed baseballs? I have a couple of those.

  • << <i>What about signed baseballs? I have a couple of those. >>

To be quite honest signed baseballs do not fetch a ton of money on Ebay versus what you paid for the item, and unless you have a legit COA you will probably even get less money.

Who do you have that you are looking to sell?

  • Hey guys, thanks for the advice and everything. When I get home I'm going to start going through everything and seeing what I can find to meet your needs. If you have any other things you're looking for let me know by PMing me. Thanks!

I wouldn't feel real comfortable in a job that needs to interview someone on a Sunday (unless I was 17 & applying @ Pizza Hut)

  • It's a special circumstance that I can't really get into. I understand what you're saying, but because of the circumstance this is what has to be done. Sorry to be sketchy, but it's cool. There's a reason why it has to be on Sunday from all parties perspectives, including me.
  • Guru, I'd be interested in any Braves cards you may have. Let me know what you come across and how much you want for them.
Atlanta Braves, Charlotte Hornets, Shawn Kemp, Dale Murphy, and Bobby Engram.

  • sucks that you have to sell of your personal items to make ends meet.
It's important to make sure that when situations like this come up you have some cash reserves. It's suggested you have enough money in the bank to survive for 6 months. Just be careful with your spending, it's so easy to buy stuff you dont need or cant afford.
  • Your absolutely right! And the investment I was involved in went south. Then things picked up again, and stupid me thought everything was okay. Wrong. Brother in law cut my pay again.
And no, I wish I had that coaching position. I could probably pay off the small amount to debt I have in a year and never worry about anything like that again.

you got a pay cut without knowing?

who do you work for? scrooge?

Kudos to Guru for working on getting out of that situation. Often times "family" thinks they can treat you horribly and you will take it. His poor wife must be so embarassed. He'll be crying without you, Guru and it wont be your problem. I wouldnt even tell him you are looking for a new job and slap that two week notice on him without him suspecting. Cuz if he suspects it, he'll treat you worse. Good luck!

    Brother-in-law cut your pay?

I'd go egg his house in the middle of the day.

    Say, "Sorry BRO. You suck."

Just out of curiosity, is it your wife's brother or your sister's husband?
  • It's my wife's sister's husband.

  • << <i>It's my wife's sister's husband. >>

Is that a B-I-L once removed?
  • Well, update I just spoke with him about stuff. I basically said in not so many words, that if the pay is cut, so are my hours. If he wants to cut the pay, then I will just come in less. He basically said, I couldn't do that and I told him, it's either that or no hours at all. Pick one. I told him the pay thing is going to be thought about over the weekend and I'll let him know on Monday morning if this is something I want to even continue to do.
I mean cut my pay? I'm the guy working with the Fortune 500, movie studios, entertainment biz people. I'm the one rakin in high $ clients. And this is the treatment that I get?! I've already told one person this morning they were better off dealing with someone else.
  • your job sounds very exciting though!
  • It's pretty fun at times, but not worth the headache that I'm going through right now.

Guru threads like this will do nothing more then put you in a weak posistion when bargaining. Good luck with the job interview.

    Steve
    Good for you.
  • Bargaining? You mean with people on here?
  • larryallen73larryallen73 Posts: 6,069 ✭✭✭
    Win is correct.
  • Sorry guys, I didn't think about that. I was just really down.
  • larryallen73larryallen73 Posts: 6,069 ✭✭✭
Don't beat yourself up Guru. Wasn't a big deal. Just I agree with Win that when negotiating you probably don't want to show weakness. Though there are a lot of nice people on these boards they are not going to give a guy money (anymore than necessary) just because they feel bad for him because he has a crappy job. I, for one, wouldn't buy something because I would be worried about you being a scam artist getting ready to go in for the big PSA boards kill. I half joke. Good luck with sales, job, life, etc....
  • LOL, yeah, I looked in the mirror this morning and I gotta say I look nothing like Uncle Fester. So, since I don't look like Gary I think we can assume it's all good.
  • Guru, do you work in that bldg off I-69 near Fishers?
  • No, that's not me. image I do know where Fishers is though.

So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts

  • Hey, I just want to thank everyone who has bought from me so far. Every little bit helps and it puts cards you want in your hands. I do have some more football cards for sale over at the B/S/T page for anyone interested. Thanks!

P.S.: The interview was on Sunday. I felt that it went well, but we shall see.
