Fixing NBA games- interesting interview...

Interview with professional handicapper

What's interesting is the part about how a ref can fix a game. This guy says he can basically dictate whether the game goes over or under, but not which team covers the spread. This leads me to think that while Donoghy probably put the fix in, all he was doing was basically calling more fouls to get the point total up. While it's certainly cheating, it might imply that the games outcomes weren't necessarily altered as much as we think they might have been. After all, if he's calling as many fouls as possible, you'd presume that he's calling them on both teams. It still sucks, but not as much as if Donoghy had $10k riding on the Suns to cover against the Spurs.

That's pretty interesting. And it makes sense....that basically they can mostly effect the over/under bets.

Wonder if Donoghy will spill everything he knows?

No reason not to cooperate at this point. He'll probably disappear into the witness protection program and never be in the public eye again. I don't see him trying to pull the "I swear I only bet on the games. I called everything fairly" routine. Even if that's the case, no one will ever believe him and he has to know that. He's probably got a nice price on his head , so cooperating with law enforcement is the smartest thing. Besides, the cops could care less about a crooked ref- they want inside info on organized crime.

  • this could dwarf the steroid issue in professional sports. is this the tip of the iceberg? is it just one ref? is it just the NBA?

  • There are rumors circulating that there are other refs involved, and nba players involved too...they could be using Donoghy to get info on the entire thing.

Fixing games, the lotto, Stern's ties to the mafia (allegedly), etc. have been going on for years.

It was only a matter of time before they were exposed...

Kick everyone out and start with a clean slate. Maybe then, the NBA could return to the game I use to love.

Yup and after he snitches he will be getting his sex change, moving to Mexico and eating burritos all the rest of his / her days.

Not that there is anything wrong with Mexico or burritos.

i read that espn story as well. one major correction brandon lang is a tout, not a handicapper. he sells his picks as opposed to betting on them. while his theory of totals make sense he is as big of a shyster as the ref who was on the take.

if anyone is a big of a gaming degenerate as i am the website to wiew is this one THE RX. if you think you can waste time in psa's forum you can waste a lifetime reading the posts over there and rarely do you find a kind word about brandon lang.

they actually have a forum called the rubber room where almost anything goes and all evil posts end up there.

czar- if you're spending all of your time over there, you clearly need some type of intervention. Seems like everyone just bashes everyone and nobody provides winning picks over the long haul. What's the point?

    Lee,
I love going there when a team scores a meaningless touchdown to cover or guy comes off the bench to hit a 35ft 3pter at the buzzer to mess with the total. The whining is worth the read. I concur that there are lot of so-called experts and braggers on that board, but they all seem to be losers in the end.

After many years of gaming there are very very very VERY few that can consistenly beat the spread and I cannot either. There are some interesting theories that get tossed about, but in this cyberspace the amount of worthwhile information out there that the books don't know about is near non-existant. With a 10% vig it is nearly impossible for the house not to win in the long run.

There was a guy last year who made one pick a week in the NFL and he always took the team that looked least likely to cover. The old contrarian play. He won his first 11 weeks, and had a very profitbale season. You can make money going against the public and having great discipline. Few if any have the discipline though and that is what kills them in the end.

I know what you mean- nobody wins in the long run. Except me that is. I've got a 78% win rate with my "Five-Star Platinum Super Titanium Solid Gold Lock of the Week" over the last 12 years!! For $2,500, I'll hook you up with my picks for an entire year. You won't be sorry!!

Does this thread just strengthen the theory/idea that gambling is not about winning money, but is more a disease/addiction. Really, if the weight of the evidence, information, data, whatever demonstrates that it is about 99.9999999999999999% certain that you will lose in the long run, why keep on gambling? Everybody tells you, you're not going to win money, you're not going to win money, but you keep on wagering and wagering thinking that you can beat the spread, the over/under, whatever. Logic dictates that ... But whoever said that human beings did things that were logical/rational?

  • yes.

    but

I have a really good friend who swears up and down that gambling online (if you know how to play well) is NOT gambling. He swears he can't lose money at it. And he's making about $5,000/month right now playing a few hours a week.

jmb - are you talking about sports gambling or poker?....it's possible in poker, not in sports betting. Although to make $5k a month only playing a few hours a week, you need a LARGE bankroll to play with.

You can't make money playing poker. That's ridiculous.

Stern just said there were no other officials involved nor currently being investigated.
