Christmas Rack Packs

ebay link

I know we've discussed this here before, but it still bugs me everytime I see it on ebay. Especially when the seller says "Near Mint" and just happens to have one of those "far away" pictures so you can't really see the condition of the cards. Just a shame that somebody is going to pay over $200 for 12 EX-EXMT commons.

<<< Baseball Cards - Cello Holiday Rack Pack - Topps - In the original packaging from 1960, front of pack (face-up cards) are John Tsitouris, Ken Johnson 1960 Rookie Star and Pittsburgh Pirates Coaches. The cards showing on the back include Joe Jay, Jimmy Dykes and Johnny Logan.

The pack is unopened and in Near Mint condition. The pack holds 12 cards. >>>

And in my opinion this seller most likely knows that these cards were not packaged in 1960, but a number of years later.

They did actually distrubute these packs around Christmas 1960. ( and other Christmases for other years). They get a bad rap and deservidly so because even then they were repacks and cards were "handled"

There is an EBAY seller out there selling his "own version" of these packs recently packed.

These appear to be the original item.

Hmmm....I have heard differently that these cards were basically packed all at once probably sometime in the 1970s. If you have any links stating that the cards were packed in the same year, please list them and I'll take a look.

In any event I think we both know that these rack packs are basically a ripoff.

The dreaded "X-mas racks" are now almost raised to the status of urban folklore!

    image

The origin seems to go in all directions.

I could see them as vending machine rejects e.g. - up to the 70s - vending machines were very popular and distributors loaded them up every week - what do they do with the leftovers that no one wants after baseball season ends and it's football time?

Could be the genesis of the x-mas rack?

Who knows? But, "everyone" knows what rack I prefer? image

I wish we could get a definitive answer on this one?

I just want to say that Mark Murphy had advertised the older ones as legit repackaged "overstocked" cards for x-mas. That I kind of remembered but...

a friend pm'ed me to tell me that he had purchased some from Mark and believes this to be the true story.

And he would know better than me. My fear? That these were tampered with - of course not by Murphy.
