Ok, FINALLY, a PCGS 3.5 Census Report == so far (48) reported AS OF 6/26/2011

orevilleoreville Posts: 12,165 ✭✭✭✭✭
Ok lets get started on the PCGS 3.5 census report!

To keep the number of posts to a minimum, please consolidate your PCGS 3.5 holdings to one posting per member or send me a pm.

This is per conder101's book on such slab:

PCGS 3.5
Another variety discovered and posted here after the initial listing of the thread. Discovered by Spinynorman this is a transitional variety between #'s 3 and 4. It has the same slab within a frame construction as 2, 2.5, and 3. But it has the same non-colorfast die cut (smooth edged) green label with the large serial numbers that start to the left of the barcode. This variety was suspected even before it was discovered because Cameron Kiefer had discovered and listed a sample slab version of this holder several months before the production slab version was found. A few more examples have turned up but this variety seems to be very scarce. As a transitional variety it was probably only produced during the last week of Dec 1989.
We will find out if these slabs are as scarce as originally thought or not.

They should be about the same abundance as the 2.5. Theoretically, the doilies should be more common, but the 3.5s seem about equally easy to find.

    Here is one of mine.

    image

The other is a 1886 ms63 Morgan; cert number 9235118

I gotta stop selling the Doilies and 3.5's I find to you guys so I can post an actual coin to one of these darn threads!!! (Though, that could result in having my invite to 'The Ranch' withdrawn!)

  • Beat me to it. I went on eBay and found a ton, but never got around to messaging you the numbers to do something with them. Don't know if I saved the document, don't think I did. image

I do have one, myself, with a couple more possibly coming soon. Seems fairly easy to find Merc dimes in these things.

    Mine;

    1943-D Merc Dime, 66FB. 7018371 cert #.

    Purchased off HA.com

I passed up a 1883-O Morgan in MS-63 on Sunday at a show. I'll attempt to get the cert. number from the dealer.
BTW, for Billet7, I looked at a Mint State Franklin in a Doily holder today.image

Sooooo, you looked at a Franklin in a Doily, or you BOUGHT a Franklin in a doily? I'm guessing the latter.

Sorry wrong slab. Scratch this one!
  • Just before the Baltimore Show I went through my collection in the safe deposit box and found these three 3.5 holdered coins:

    25c SLQ 1925 MS65 #08207620
    50c Commemorative BTW MS64 1950-S #09154398
    1S$ 1888-S MS63 #09242459

    Garrow

Edit to add: None are CAC stickered.
  • I noticed that the pics of these holders do not have cert numbers beginning with a zero such as what I have listed. I copied my numbers from "my Inventory" from PCGS. The holders may well not have these zero beginning cert numbers.

They don't. When they switched holder inserts to the blue ones, they added another number to their cert's, so in order to accommodate the change, they made the system read the old slab numbers as if there was a zero in front.

I also have 2 3.5 Sample slabs with the 1964-D Roosie MS65. the cert # is the 12345678

I am interested to see how this goes. I try to pick these up when ever I find them (Unless it is a coin out of my financial reach....I have seen a few of those!)

Thought about bidding on that one, but I didn't...

I was the underbidder on this one though, didn't want to bid too much since it's missing the outer ring:

I did end up winning this 3.5 though:

Now that I've been sort of looking for them, I've seen a bunch of 2.5 and 3.5 holders in the past few months in auctions and at coin shows. In almost all cases there is no additional premium being charged for the holders. I haven't been buying them either (unless I really like the coin) since they just don't seem very special to me and don't seem nearly as rare or collectible as something like a doily holder. Maybe I'm wrong though and this thread will prove me wrong????
