Re: Bill Mazeroski's true defensive ability, his HOF merit, and more...
Many baseball connoisseurs, agree that either Eddie Collins or Bid McPhee, were the best defenders ever, at 2B. others compare Jose Oquendo, Joe Gordon, Nellie Fox, and the aforementioned Bill Maz, to those two. Maz does have some, although nowhere near unanimous, support, as perhaps the best defensive 2B. Brooks Robinson,… -
Re: Bill Mazeroski's true defensive ability, his HOF merit, and more...
" Nap Lajoie was not a great second baseman," Nap certainly was among the best hitters, at any position, of all time, he is light years ahead of Maz in that area, his baserunning is far greatly superior when compared to the below average Maz, as well. He actually outperfomed his peers at 2B, in FA, by a greater margin than… -
Re: Bill Mazeroski's true defensive ability, his HOF merit, and more...
Very interesting and enlightening information, indeed. The sample size, unfortunately, is perhaps a bit too small to make any totally absolute conclusion, though it is the largest and only one, available for such a comparison, therefore the results can not be ignored, nor casually "bushed-off". Makes one wonder "why"… -
Re: Bill Mazeroski's true defensive ability, his HOF merit, and more...
Exactly how bad was Maz's offense? I have not seen anything based on his stats that show he was a putrid slap hitter always around the Mendoza line. I think in your argument against Maz you have devalued his offense contributions with little to back you up. Just how bad was his offense against other 2b's of his time? The… -
Re: Bill Mazeroski's true defensive ability, his HOF merit, and more...
You mention it is better but how much better? What is the order of magnitude? 7-8 thousands of a percentage point is how much better than the league? Still out of context arguments. No one is arguing Maz was a great hitter, I think he was right around average for 2b of his time and a little worse in some areas (OBP and… -

Dallas my disgust comes from the fact he Hoopster (not Skin) won't even acknowledge Maz got hurt. He uses "" for the alleged injuries like he doesn't want to give them any weight. Like me or someone else was making this up just to interupt his theory on why Maz sucked at the end of his career. If he wants to show how Maz… -
Bill Mazeroski's true defensive ability, his HOF merit, and more...
You can skip the intro, and get down to the meat and potatoes below the dotted line if you wish..... Many folks do not think Bill Mazeroski belongs in the Hall of Fame. His batting ability is clearly not HOF material, thus we are left to see how good his defense actually was. Some claim that he was not only the best… -
Re: Bill Mazeroski's true defensive ability, his HOF merit, and more...
I think the argument for Maz was he was adequate offensivley compared to other 2b in the league but his devensive ability being the best of all time at the position is why he was in the HOF race. Again anyone who wants to say Maz was just awful offensively is obviously stretching it especially in seasons like 58 or 66 when… -
Re: Bill Mazeroski's true defensive ability, his HOF merit, and more...
Thanks, Aro, that is one of the articles I was thinking of. There's another that gives some more team data that I'll try to find later. If I recall correctly, what it shows is that with Lajoie out of the lineup, the team made exactly the same number of infield outs - there was just a shift from 2B to SS. James found… -

Jaxxr, The term "replacement Player" in this study above was/is the actual player that replaced the starter. The term "replacement Player" done in analysis to determine a players worth compared to what a typical player in his stead would do, would be the 'average' level replacement player. Some teams have really good ones,…
