1979 Type 2 SBA $1.00 How do you tell if it's type 2
I bought a 1979 s proof SBA today. Can someone tell me how to distinguish the difference between the type one and the type two? Thanks. Ogden -

The '81-S type 2 is of course a little different than the '79-s t2. The '81 has a different shape mint mark. Some of the type 1's are clear are some type 2's are less distinct. It can be diff- icult to find a buyer for the t2's at wholesale, but there are some who'll almost always pay 90% of bid. -

The 'S' on a type 2 is very clear; whereas on a type 1 it almost looks like a blob: The type 1, on the left, isn't a very good picture, but you get the idea. The S is pretty indistinct. Coppercoins, I just realized that it's like the 1979 type 1 and 2 Lincolns. Same difference in the mint marks. Ogden -

Sometimes you get lucky. I picked up an 81 type 2 in a set a few months ago. That is the difference between an $8.00 coin and a $180.00 coin on the SBA, although try getting that $180.00! for more information on "small dollars - try this website Small Dollar Coins -

The type I will look like a nearly indistinguishable blob, and the type II will look much more like an "S". A good measure of the difference is to look at the mint mark on both 1978 and 1980 proofs...the 1978 has a type-I-like mint mark, and the 1980 has a type-II-like mint mark. -

Yup, same difference goes across the board for the proofs of 1979 and 1981. All have type I and type II. -

79 Type I - blob 79 Type II is the same as 81 Type I - better S 81 Type II has clear S with enlarged ends Three different dies, not four. Hope that doesn't add to the confusion. CK had it exactly right.
