Japan 1870 1 Yen Type 1 圓 銀 Right JNDA 01-9A
Is PCGS's designation "Type 1 圓 銀 Right" for the 1 Yen 1870 the same as the ""Type 1 圓" designation? Since the second one is on the right anyway? If it is different, can you please provide an example? (I understand the "Left" designation). Also there is no Border/no Border designation for the "Right" or "Left" designation,… -

Mintage is not necessarily equal rarity. 1870 might be kept by collectors while others might has melt up. Plus that 1o:1 ratio is for the whole stamped coins not necessarily only to 1870. Maybe 1870 got a lot of stamped coin we never know. -

This just sold at SB hk auction last night. It is a 1870 type 1 with gin on the right. With gin mark the price is couple times higher than without gin mark. It is very collectible with gin mark especially with a non details grade. -

So the right/left designation for Type 1 is for countermarked / counterstamped coins with the "gin" (silver)? -

One thing I want to mention is Gin on the left is stamped in Osaka Mint, and gin on the right is stamped in Tokyo Mint which is much more rare than on the left in general. it is estimated Osaka mint stamped about 10 million; Tokyo mint stamped about 1 million coins. -

Thank you for providing this useful information. If the ratio of the stamp of Left:Right is 10:1, I wonder why the PCGS population does not reflect this: 28 total (Right) and 17 total (Left). The survival rate seems to be very different for the two varieties, opposite to what one would expect based on mintage (stamping). -

Hi everybody. Here are mine yens 1870: with and without the mark. As i know the mark was minted in 1896: left-hand - Osaka, right-hand - Tokio. It seemes it was related to the golden standard of the new yen with another proportion of value silver-gold. Or something like this. -

There is one in tonight's auction but very ugly looking. Current bid is $160, it will go higher I believe. I remember couple years ago a VF or XF Details 1870 with gin sold for over one k at stephen album auction. -

When more people collect gin mark yen the price will go a lot higher because there are not many out there. -
