Yes and no. While they didn't alloy their gold, native California gold was only .880 to .887 fine, on average, and they lacked the necessary parting acids to refine the purity. While these coins were made to be about 1% heavier, in total, than their federal counterparts, they may have actually still turned out to be 1-2%… -
