The only thing missing is that his dog just died. I find it interesting that "slander" was used. (False statements injurious to a person's reputation.) Since the statements are true, might be closer to gossip! -

My first thought was that it looked like some of the modern engraved Hobo Nickels you see. My second thought was that it looked like a modern cast or maybe crude false dies. -

Otto Zehm in Spokane. A false report was called in about him and then retracted. The police heard the retraction and attempted an arrest anyway - by attacking him. He complied but was hogtied facedown anyway and died. -

To me, it looks like it was struck by fake cent dies. That's what I meant by 2 stage sandwich error... first a Lincoln cent was pressed into a metal, then this false die was used to squeeze onto the Merc. -

That would really need to go to a TPG before I’d be comfortable giving a value. The lack of denticles on the second strike make me suspect it is a genuine die struck a second time with false dies. Sean Reynolds -

There are many real authentic 1857 gold $3's that have the missing serifs on the I's. Most likely one of these coins was used to create the false dies to make this counterfeit. The omegaman counterfeit $3 was dated 1882. -
