Re: I need another new and exciting hobby for 2018
I like the idea of a hobby within the confines of my warm comfortable home and something safe. I'm not dying by the saying "he died doing something he loved." Coming on sixty I want to make seventy or more. I've already done the adventurous hobby thing.....survived some very dangerous near death experiences and always… -

Re: Which of the 1866 Five-Cent Patterns are True Essays
In my mind, No. 2 is certainly J-473, so not all of the essays sent to McCulloch can qualify as great rarities. And, if consistency in the number of pieces struck guides our thinking, then J-461 fits into the No. 3 slot (although the possibility of restrikes comes into play) and J-470 fits in the No. 4 slot. But how… -
Re: The fuss about error coins...

I suppose first we need to establish if it is an error or a variety. Also I would imagine the employees you are refering to push the hoppers around and such but are not included in repair or modification of dies. Imho there are varieties that rightly command a great premimum. There are others I scratch my head when I look… -

Re: 1921 P Mercury Dime Junk Silver Find - Grade in!!
Wear from lying in the ground about 4 to 6 inches down for 80 years. Go drop a coin on the lawn. Now, see how long it "doesnt' take to descend 1/2 to 2 inches, not long. The rain the snow the soil has this effect. I have found countless coins including Morgan dollars (14) and I tell you the elements have an effect on the… -
Re: For post 1964 circulating coinage, what criteria is used by you to determine if they should be slabb
I'm mostly an Ike kind of guy....and this is what I use: 1. Any error. 2. Any Clad Ike that looks to be 65 or higher....(64 or higher for 71-P & 72-P). 3. Any Silver Ike that looks like it has a shot at 68....(66 or higher for 71-S). 4. I don't do proof Ikes unless they have cool NT...(a lot of 74-S Silvers fall in this… -
Re: Juz bit*hin'
I am sorry to hear your troubled. I was unemployed for 18 months. We nearly lost the house. Then my Dad died. I nearly sold the coin collection. I was offered a eight dollar an hour job the same day I was to close the deal. I decided that was a sign to hold on. After several months trying to support my family and debts on… -
Re: IrishMike's prized spotted coin
Lakes - I'm curious, have you seen any as strong on the lower half as this one? Most I've seen have stronger upper detail, often showing the bustline on each side of the shield. Either the dies weren't always as parallel as we think -- which would account for the uneven strikes seen on a lot of IH's from this era -- or… -
