Re: 1813 busties...they just keep coming :)
That 107 is pretty cool. The 10 o'clock obverse clashing is fun. Olive leaves and berries. DETINU below that. It's also off center struck. Looks to be a fairly early die state but it's a little hard to say from the pix. Are the usual cracks there? How about the four die dots down low in the date? 1.8.1..3 I like the die… -
Re: The 1964 Peace Dollar and Gilroy Roberts
I have dug through everything I can find while doing research for a book on Peace dollars (date/mint/variety/history, etc. publication sometime in the fall - maybe). So far nothing. All the dies were destroyed in August 1964 and the last coin was rolled out in 1973. The 1989 inventory of models and galvanos does not list… -
Re: shield nickel with copper streaks
It's probably not uncommon. I've seen it before, but never quite so pronounced. That's definitely interesting. That's the sort of "error" that would be a detraction to some and a plus to others. Personally, my opinion falls between the two extremes. The streaks are a bit distracting on one hand, but on the other hand, they… -
Re: Need a little Help with Die States
@StrikeOutXXX @Insider2 @ChrisH821 @messydesk Sorry for the delayed response. As usual, an unexpected obligation lasted much longer than I expected. If I understand the exchanges correctly, there is a consensus that the Image A REVERSE is at least a MDS while the Image B REVERSE is most likely a LDS. This reasoning is… -
Re: New 1909 MPL Die
<< <i> Chris, My book lists coins which I have known or read about, but which I have not verified. My objective is to hopefully inspire readers to look for new or different dies and publish for the benefit of all. Listing as not verified does not mean they do not exist, it simply means the author could not verify the coin… -
1921 Vam 75a with broken planchet?

Im almost certain it is a VAM 75A but it is a reall late die state. These dies are about to fall apart. There a ton of craks and breaks that don't show up in the pics. I was looking through the junk box and almost passed it over because of what I thought to be damage. But on closer inspection it looked to be a broken… -
Re: Are the numeral sizes on all dates of draped bust half cents so non-uniform?
PipestonePete May 11, 2009 I was photographing the coins in my Dansco type-set and noticed that the last two digits on my 1806 Draped Bust half cent are considerably larger than the first two. Is this a characteristic of all the Draped Bust half cents? It was often the case in 19th century mints (not just the U.S.) that… -
Re: BEAUTIFUL TRIPLE STRUCK LINCOLN
errormaven - Please explain, in layman's terms, a saddle strike to us. Double strike - The partial second strike obliterates the original image beneath it, but the rest of the first strike is undistorted, except in the immediate vicinity of the second strike. A saddle strike is generally not a true double strike, but… -
Re: So who wins Manager of the Year?
A nice quote from the OC Registers writer Sam Miller. April 9, 2009. A few days after Nick Adenhart died, the Angels called up Reggie Willits. Willits wasn't the obvious choice from a strategic view, but as a veteran who had made the trip from Salt Lake many times before, he was perhaps the one player who could carry the… -
Re: 1990 NO S PROOF LINCOLN CENT
"I think of the No S as a die variety, rather than an error. The omission was in the creating of that die. I tend to think of errors as things that go wrong in the striking process, and not in the preparation of the dies." i agree fully with doug on this many varieties in the lincoln series out shadow the no s 1990 proof i…
