Re: Coins with "rumored" existence...
1869cc dollar. Abe Curry, mint Superintendent, had the dies in the fall of 1869 to start minting coinage in Carson City. However, there had not been a "coiner" approved by Washington to start the minting process. The "coiner" was there at the mint but was not yet approved and thus they could not start minting dollars, or… -
Re: What is a error coin?
Hi There is a difference between the terms errors and varieties. Varieties such as doubled dies, although they may result from an error in the manufacturing process of hubs or dies are usually not classified as errors. The general defenition and Mr. Weinberg may want to add or take away from this is that an error is the… -
Re: 1945-P Winged Head Liberty (Mercury) Dime FSB
BuffaloIronTail: Facts: WWII was winding down in the late fall of 1944. US Mint in Philly was gearing up production of the dimes as that was the most actively used coin of all. Why? Soldiers from the European theatre beginning to come home. Philly US Mint was making the dimes as fast as they could. No time to make proof… -
Re: New "Shamu" Peace $ VAM.......
After the dies struck millions of coins small parts of them would eventually fall apart (break) and create a void where part of the design should have been. When the dies came down to strike the next planchet, metal would ooze into these voids creating these types of odd marks...... now called VAM's....... -
Re: 1896 Morgan; "In God We T ust" ?
Filled dies should not be given variety status because they can come and go as the die fills and then the plugging material falls out. Also different dies can have the same filling occur so you can have many dies all creating the same variety, or one die creating many varieties as different letters fill and empty. Since… -
Re: Sabotage at the Mint - Ten years ago
<< I remember when these came out but never heard the story on how they became. Thanks for posting it EagleEye. >> You still haven't, while backed with some solid research the OP is still closer to historical fiction than a definitive account. There is simply no way to prove these marks were made intentionally. Until… -

<< <i> << <i>Does anyone alse agree that Paterno died of a broken heart. RIP Joe Pa >> He died of lung cancer. This script was written long before Jerry Sandusky became a household name. >> I would say if not for Sandusky, Joe would still be alive. Joe had nothing else to live for after being fired. His "family" was gone,… -
Re: Limited Mintage has a new one
. . I spoke to him this morning. He did make the dies but they had a falling out. Shortly after he had dies Based on his with laser. So, this is not his. Either way this by intaglio is very nice looking and so is Ron’s. He just has decided to make his own versions and make it look more like ancients. -
Re: Looking to buy only the top Kennedy Proof coins (short set)

Gads, you and junior have out done yourselves this time. He appears to be a chip off the POS. And, my son is Marine, a sergeant. Please don't go sullying our Corps with the belief junior has what it takes. If he is like his old man, all false bravado and no integrity, no honesty, no sense of the real world and totally… -
Re: How about this coin for a added mint mark!!! 1916-D Mercury
Most added mintmarks are glued on. Put a drop of acetone on the mintmark and it'll fall off in a minute. Also, this mintmark doesn't have the right shape. Real ones have a triangular opening in the D mintmark. Also, the 1916-D dimes were struck using four different reverse dies. Check to see if the mintmark location…
