     Who said anything about Photoshop? I don't doubt it's a real picture of a fake error. This has every appearance of a coin struck with false dies. Even if that isn't exactly what happened, there's no chance it's a real error. A picture of the reverse will not change that answer. A similar example

     The "A" got filled probably with grease and debris becoming hard pack and then breaking lose and falling onto an unstruck planchet and then struck by the dies leaving an impression. These are extremely rare. My very best example which I sold had all of IGWT fall out as in a dropped motto.

     There certainly were people with the die cutting skills to make false dies.

     There was a reason listed for the counterfeit status by PCGS, as previously mentioned "False Dies"

     Bass's was one of the "false mules," and I do recall it sold for a good amount, though I forget what it was. It took me a while to think there were two different "mule" varieties, and a while longer to realize that one was in fact, not a real assay medal mule but a different mint medal entirely.      Yup that's it! Another one for the contemporary counterfeit collection. I have another 1861 quarter but I believe it's a different set of false dies. Will take a look later on. http://www.lsccweb.org/Counterfeits.shtml
