I agree with Miles, I prefer coins. I just bought a $2.5 eagle at spot at last weekends CT coin show. It was polished, but its easier form me to verify the authenticity than a generic bar that is sealed in plastic... Buy American (gold AGE)! -

None of the above, in my opinion. I think it is a naturally-occuring shallow spot next to the area of the planchet that would have been pushed up during the upset mill (rimming process). And so it is simply an area where the planchet texture didn't get struck out. -

I just got the 1969 Mint set today. There's not much spotting even tho it looks evident in the seller's images but nearly all the coins are covered in a white milky film. I'll give 'em a dip sometime next week with before and after images.
