Re: The Michael F. Hayes Barber Megathread
Tim - I can't remember the last time I bought a coin with the intention of turning it for a quick profit. Back in the 1990's that was sometimes the case, but now I pretty much only buy coins I want to keep. Craig - Neat gold$1. Darrell - Glad to see your 40 set. Glenn - I'm not a student of barber halves enough to comment… -
Re: The Michael F. Hayes Barber Megathread
Thanks for all the love on the '97 S Quarter; I'm quite happy with it. I love finding tough coins in the wild! Here's another newp back from the grading room, a 1908 Quarter now in a PCGS MS64 holder: I paid AU 50 money for this coin in the raw from Mac Vanderstein on eBay. I suspect he thought it was a cleaned coin, but… -
Re: The Michael F. Hayes Barber Megathread
I realize I don't post much to this thread, but I dang-near fell out of my chair at the price of the 1909 AU58+ Barber half. I'm assuming that two collectors simply had to have it and, since it is currently a pop 1 in + that they both went nuclear. However, is the overall market for AU58+ Barber half dollars really that… -
Re: The Michael F. Hayes Barber Megathread
Justin, If a couple more people decide to do what I did you would have a difficult time completing that awesome set you are starting! Glenn...you need to participate more here and thanks for the Kudos. Glad your shop is doing well...hard thing to do these days! Mike....don't know what you learned from me! Still trying to… -
Re: The Michael F. Hayes Barber Megathread
Justin.... Jeff,Lenny, and Verne. I'm am collecting, not investing! I also am not concerned with the few 5 figure purchases I have made. I can justify them in 2 ways! 1...in the overall cost of my collection if they drop in value the coins I purchased earlier will more than compensate in the overall scheme of my set. 2nd...I… -
Re: The Michael F. Hayes Barber Megathread
Vern, I think it's pretty safe to say that all 1900-O Barbers are semi key dates. I love that Paesan Quarter. Jeff, It's always a sad occasion when a Barber set is retired. Really pleased that the owner opened up the images. Just missing the 92-P in 58+. That's one wonderful looking collection. When and if, this set gets… -
Re: The Michael F. Hayes Barber Megathread
It would be nice if there was a repository for coin photos for date/ mm. The photos I post here are about 1/3 their native size; just think of all the detail that drops. Although Vern and I are "into" coin photography, I don't recall others into it. Many others do have their coins photographed by friends or professionally,… -

<< <i> << <i>The FUN show was a 1 way street....Barbers going out the door and none coming in. >> << <i>LOL! Yeah I did buy a couple of half's! >> Glad everyone had a good time at FUN. It was a good read. Darrell, you crack me up. Say one thing, and present another. >> I agree, Justin. He does present a good sob story, and… -
Re: The Michael F. Hayes Barber Megathread
Tim... I think you answered your own questions. It makes no difference whatsoever who submits coins . The graders are given a box of coins. Only 20 coins are in a box, the boxes are given out in random ( I believe ) and I know more than one grader looks at the coins - each grader decides for him(her)self what the grade of… -
Re: The Michael F. Hayes Barber Megathread
I picked up a couple of slabbed Barber Quarters from Tom Smith in New York last week; a good guy. Here's a 1900 O that came in an old small white ANACS AU 58 holder. I cracked it out to submit raw: The coin has nice original surfaces and attractive toning. As a bonus, there's significant die clashes on both sides. There's…
