Re: Does this look real (quarter on a silver dime planchet)?
<< <i>I'm going to go out on a limb and predict that is a genuine silver dime planchet struck by fake quarter dies. I've never seen an off-metal with such an irregular shape before, it shouldn't be that far out of round if it were struck by a standard press so I think it might have been struck at much lower pressure by a… -
Re: Would like another opinion, Does this 1995 D Nickel not show 1995 & 1993?
It's easy to see why you think there is a 3 there. ;) You can also see the 5. ;) Look at the center bar of the 3, yours is too long to be a 3. Compare here. ;) The next problem you have is how would this happen? Did a 1993 nickel just happen to fall perfectly on the dies in 1995 to exactly overstrike the last digit? Or did… -
Re: Need to understand the GW 'Starburst' coin. What is causing this?
When we use the term "grease", most people tend to think of a thick oily material like bearing grease, or vasaline. In either case a thick liquid. But the mint "grease" is a mixture of many things. Grease, lubricating oil, dust, dirt, metal dust and shavings. It may have the consistancy of anywhere from fine machine oil to… -
GOETZ: Opus 632 "Fanaticism"

K-632 FANATICISM, 1945, Cast AE, 70mm, Incuse Edge-Punch, RRR This medal was created in 1945 with the fall of Nazi Power. Kienast’s description has a naked women on the obverse but I tend to think Goetz was showing the German “Michel”, not in his usual whimsical pre-Reich depiction, but as survivor with long hair, a… -
Re: Any info regarding the 1925/27/29 counterfeit Buffalo nickels?
I've seen the 1927, it is quite crude but have never seen or heard of the other two. If these were made in those numbers you'd think they would be frequently seen today. Christian-the '16-S die you refer to is the well known one and is quite common. They are never seen any better than Fine condition so the false dies were… -
Who Would Bid More Than $75 For This Coin? (It is accompanied by a beautiful picture)
Most patterns are very rare, and some are unique. Nevertheless, the term pattern is often used to refer to coins that do not strictly fall within this definition. The following definitions describe the various coins usually collected in the pattern series. Essai or Pattern – this is any coin struck from a prototype die or… -

Re: How to determine Die Marriage
Looking at the Bugert books is a good idea, since they specifically show all the marriages between the obverse and reverse dies. For VAMs, this is a bit trickier. There are some dates where a VAM number correlates to exactly one die marriage, and some where it correlates to approximately one. Dates that haven't been… -
Re: Any guesses on what this is?
Bumping this thread so some of the other error guys can see it. I've seen this variety before, with major cuds on both the obverse and reverse dies. Most likely, either a foreign object got between the dies or they experienced a violent die clash, which caused both dies to crack and fail. The other marks around the face…
