Re: Are milk spots inevitable on most silver bullion, proofs and rounds?
From what I've read and seen its caused from residual "detergent" left on the planchets and or blanks after they are initially washed and rinsed. Now, what I do not understand, is you will see examples of let's say i.e., MS 70 SAE bought on x day. The coin is beautiful and stunning. Not a single milkspot to see. Then one… -
Re: ase milk spots
<< <i> << <i>appreciate help for first timer. Please explain milk spots. Do they appear on unc. w; reverse and proof ASE or just on one. What is the frequency of spots appearing? Less chance of happening if ASE is left in mint capsule ? Thanks. >> Hi, All I can say is that none of my eagles have spotting. None of the ones… -
Re: 2006 Silver Eagle Anniversary Sets, Sell, Hold or Buy More?
I know this opinion won't be very popular here, but I would sell any slabbed sets and keep the raw coins. The slabbed ones are the coins that have problems with milkspotting, I have never seen a coin in its original mint packaging that was milkspotted. It doesn't matter that the slab says FS or 70, if it's milkspotted it… -
Re: Milk spots on SAEs
I don't know if this applies to SAE milkspots, but I thought I recalled a post from Russ about using MS70 to dip 1964 PROOF Kennedys prior to sending them in for grading and having good success avoiding the formation of milkspots that way. I don't know the chemistry of MS70 and why that would prevent milkspots on PROOF… -
Re: PCGS has a $50,000 reward for anyone who can solve the ASE milk spotting problem.
<< <i> << <i>what's the "problem"? milkspotting happens. live w/ it. K S >> What if it doesn't have to happen and can be prevented in some way? Do you like milk spots? >> i don't care about milkspots. we're talking about basically silver rounds. the issue is people getting all worked up about "GRADE", has nothing really to… -
Milk spot or ding... which would you sell or keep?
I ended up with two 2004 W SAE's. Slabbed PF69 UC. Both are excellent looking. One has a tiny ding, only noticable under 10x, on the top of the shield on the reverse. It would be PF70 if not for this tiny ding. The other has a quarter mm, very light milkspot on the sun on the obverse. I don't need two and would like to… -
Re: Spots popping up all over my PCGS 25th Set Proofs
I think the milkspotting originates from contaminants still present on the surface when the coin leaves the mint. Over time, the contaminants, whatever they are, react and the phenomena occurrs. I don't think it's the TPG plastic or the gasket. There's ATB bullion out there with milk spots as well as tons of ASE bullion… -
Re: Milk Spots??
<< <i>Bajjerfan, you are correct in saying acetone will do nothing for milkspots. Russ recommended dipping them in acetone BEFORE milkspots developed... upon receipt of the coin from the mint. Cheers, RickO >> Tho not specifically stated, my reply was addressing the pre-spotting since that was what the statement was about.… -
Re: What part of a coin collection would you part with first?
I agree I have ASEs from the 1990’s and none “milkspotted” (is that a verb?) / I don’t think they ‘form’ milkspots, rather, they express them after some time that were already there. Milk spots are formed from soap and other products used in the planchette cleaning that doesn’t get properly rinsed… these residues become… -
Re: just not the coin dipper I thought I was
<< <i>What removed the milkspot the MS 70 or the acetone? I just got a original roll of 1958-s Franklins that have milkspots but otherwise are beautiful. >> not sure what removed the spot, and I agree with segoja that real milk spots cannot be removed, or at least i have never had any luck in that arena, and wrecked quite…
