Re: Chinese or Domestic?
FWIW, I saw some fake S.L. quarter errors back when I was with ANACS (till 1984). Those consisted of a genuine normal coin given a false second strike off-center, and a false off-center strike on a genuine silver quarter planchet, both from the same pair of counterfeit dies. The off center was positioned to show a date… -
Re: Share an off-Market coin that you want to improve your set
Sort answer: I have not seen a problem-free large flan 1769 G P 8 Reales up for auction since I have pursued one over the past many years. Longer answer: The minting equipment at the Guatemala Casa de Moneda was falling apart by the end of the 1760s, evidenced by broken punches and inconsistent strikes from an aging coin… -
A New Roman Bronze

After a harrowing trip from Germany this arrived on my shores. Constans, the son of Constantine the Great, was born in c. AD 320. His mother was the ill-fated Fausta who Constantine had executed in AD 326, possibly for her role in bringing false charges against Constantine's older son Crispus resulting in his execution. It… -

For those not familiar with the Ed Delahanty story ... Quite interesting. Delahanty died when he was swept over Niagara Falls in 1903. He was apparently kicked off a train by the train's conductor for being drunk and disorderly. The conductor said Delahanty was brandishing a straight razor and threatening passengers. After… -

Re: Rarity assessment of coins with mint errors.
That's kind of hard for us to do, because as I said in an earlier post, coins with multiple errors on them like that effectively don't exist. If you Google "multiple errors coin" on Google, you will get millions of hits, mostly people on Facebook and elsewhere asking about coins they mistakenly believe have "multiple… -

Re: Real or Fake???? 1795 Dollar Double Struck
I am very dubious, and would want to see it in hand before offering an opinion as to authenticity. One possible WAG, strictly for the sake of conversation: Genuine coin environmentally damaged, perhaps in the ground; heavily tooled by the fool that found it; then given a false second strike from false dies copied off the… -
Re: Found in a roll.....A cool Lincoln.
To make a pair of false dies, place a coin between two sheets of relatively soft metal, such as aluminum or brass, and squeeze them all together in a bench vise. The design of the coin will be sunk into the two sheets of metal. Now move one (as in this case) or both sheets of metal relative to the coin and squeeze again.…
