1871's do come with Shallow N' s S-4 and S-5, but this is not one of them. It is die-struck from false transfer dies. -

Repeating defects such as this is a sure sign of fake coins made from the same set of false dies. They're probably made from real gold though. -

It could easily be gold. Don't forget about all the counterfeit 1964 error cents struck from false dies. The same "mint" could have produced this coin. -

1) A struck quarter could not possibly make it through the automatic feeding system on a press set up to strike cents. 2) If a press that was set up to feed quarters had cent dies installed in it, it is still unlikely that the quarter could make it through the feeding mechanism because a struck quarter is larger in… -

In that case, the slabbed one is also probably cast, not struck from false dies. If anyone can see that clearly from these images, I’d like to know how. Not that I doubt it’s possible. -

The only thing missing is that his dog just died. I find it interesting that "slander" was used. (False statements injurious to a person's reputation.) Since the statements are true, might be closer to gossip! -

My first thought was that it looked like some of the modern engraved Hobo Nickels you see. My second thought was that it looked like a modern cast or maybe crude false dies.
