Re: top shelf ASE...NT or AT ?

<< <i> << <i> << <i>Are those toned milkspots??? >> i was wondering about that also, could it be??? >> I'd guess those are incipient or soon to be milk spots. I don't think an ASE will tone over the area that will eventually be a milk spot as the stuff that will eventuate as a milk spot protects the surface so to speak and… -
Re: My First 2023 Lincoln Cent Extra V..........
@jmlanzaf said: I don't think milk spots is the right term Does it really matter? You get the point though, don't you? Sure it matters if you care to use terms correctly. If you don't care then sure, have at it. Corrosion spots are not milk spots. Even novice collectors are aware of the distinction. But yeah, you do you… -
Re: $25 AGE purchase ....umm, what do you do, if anything?

<< <i> << <i>That's strange as I have never seen milky-white spots on any AGE. What I see is a sort of orange toning that in some cases looks cool but never milky-white. Are you sure you didn't drop in in your morning bowl of cereal? I know the white spots on ASE Proofs can be easily removed but not from non-proofs. Either… -
Re: Scored a nice cherrypick - a 1959 OGP proof set containing.......
Dipping coins is a tricky area. On silver proof coins I have found, after lots of study and practice, the only thing that can be done safely (with damaging the coin) is the removal of translucent milky white haze. This can be done with acetone or a diluted acid based dip. If other things are present on the surface of the… -
Re: Holy crap!!! Look at my grades!! - Update - They're here!

<< <i> << <i>Nice score. They're going for between $150-$180 on ebay recently. Dump 'em before the milk spot invasion takes over. >> Dreaded milk spots, somebody ought to make a movie. "Attack of the Milk Spots" "Revenge of the Milk Spots" >> No, the correct movie title would be. "Invasion Of the Milk Spots" -
Re: Does Can. Maple Leaf packaging contain PVC?
Canada silver maples come in sheets of ten coins, sealed in a "blister pack". The sheet is made from polyethylene terephthalate polyester film, commonly called by the trade name Mylar. This is the same material that was used by the US Mint in the late 1950s and early 1960s for Proof Sets. The clear plastic "slides" used in… -
Re: Spots popping up all over my PCGS 25th Set Proofs
<< <i> << <i>Regular ASEs spot too. PCGS should dip these BEFORE holdering IMO, save a lot of grief esp. on 70s. I hear both acetone and EZest touted as the preferred dip. Perhaps PCGS should get 3 rolls from a monster box, dip 20 in EZest, 20 in acetone and 20 undipped. Grade and holder and see what happens. >> Someone… -
Re: Is it right to use PCGS's buyback policy for Silver Eagles that are known to milkspot?
And Milk Spotting doe snot occur on all Silver Eagles. However, if you have an MS70 graded Eagle and it develops unsightly milk spots then by all means, send it in for the gradeing guarantee! PCGS is aware of the problems and is willing to accept the consequences of this problem on some Silver Eagles. As a side note, the… -
Re: Coin dealers: Please answer these questions......
mrearlygold: I can relate to your point about finding a cherrypick and acquiring it without the dealer ever learning about it. It happened to me just last week. Though "modern" and thus not everyones cup of tea, I bought a 1959 Proof set for $25.00. The set had a half with a DCAM obverse and a moderate CAM reverse. The… -
