I think one of the reasons MD occurs on Lincoln's ear so often is that it is a high spot on the coin and is the last spot the die touches when released from the strike. (View Post)1 -

You are correct in stating it is a Small Date but it is only worth 1 cent so might as well spend it unless you need it for a set. Also “very good” is one of the lower grades for a coin. (View Post)1
