First Submission of Error Coins - My 2 favorites to share

As the thread title states, I just received results from first ever submission of error coins. I’ve probably submitted around 1000ish US coins, world coins, and tokens over the years, but never errors.

I generally don’t collect errors or seek them out for purchase, but my LCS bought a collection earlier this year and I had a chance to pick up some pieces that I thought were pretty cool.

  1. 1865 IHC (15% off center) VF 35. This was one of the LCS pick ups.

  1. 2000 Virginia State 25c (off center) MS 65. This I actually did buy from eBay. It popped up during a search for Virginia themed tokens (I’m a Virginia boy through and through). Crazy fun fact about this coin is that it upgraded 3 points from its previous holder.

Came in ANACS MS 62 holder. Cracked it out and PCGS liked it as a 65. Sure wish I could get those crack out results on things that aren’t state quarters. :D

Anyways, something a little different for your viewing pleasure this morning.

    Love them.
    I've always thought it curious how some of these early off-center coins circulated as long as they did before being pulled from circulation. Some are worn right down to about GD04 levels.

    Nice errors. My experience with ANACS grading errors is they seem to grade them lower than NGC and PCGS. My guess, and it's purely a guess, is that ANACS takes the blank area of off centers into account when grading where NGC and PCGS just grade the die struck area. The blank area is always marked up and baggy.

    Does the PCGS Virginia Quarter have a percentage off center?

    I don’t want to stir up a problem,
    But I would consider that to be a very nice uncentered broad strike, since there are absolutely no design elements missing on either side.

    Just my two cents worth……..

    Great to get your thoughts Fred. I don’t have the submission back in hand yet but believe it’s just been designated “struck off center” without a percentage. There were 6 other off center strikes and they all had percentages listed but not this one.

    …..there were 2 dimes that received “broadstruck” designations, but this is definitely “struck off center”.

    As previously mentioned I’m not much of an error expert at all but I do know what you’re saying and would have to agree with you now that you’ve mentioned it.

    Appreciate your input.
