    ANACS certainly, including several samples.

The only tokens I'm aware of in NCG and PCGS samples are things like FASTCOIN token and NGC's multibrand pokerchip.

Are you saying ANACS will slab wooden nickels?

During the Great Depression of the 1930's, some towns and communities issued wooden nickels to stimulate their economies. These are historic and collectable.

Perfect! Thank you. I had no idea. I have one from that era. I'll have to check with them to see if it's one that they'll slab.

These are technically Depression Scrip, which are quite different from the commonly seen souvenir or advertising wooden nickels and round "TUITs". I imagine the currency graders may actually authenticate and grade them, since they were often banknote shaped, even though they were called wooden nickels.

I sent ANACS an email inquiring if they'd slab depression era wooden money. Here's the reply I received: "Unfortunately, this is false. We do not grade these coin types. We recommend reaching out to another grading service like NGC or PCGS. Let me know if you have any questions."

The problem with slabbing a wooden nickel is the grading service would have to custom fabricate the slab since they vary in size and thickness. It's just not practical for a low value item.

Isn't it nice, in this day and age, that you received a reply so quickly !

I have a set of Portuguese ceramic coins issued in 1921 that I wanted slabbed to protect the coins and none of the 4 tpgs would slab them (Anacs, NGC, PCGS, iCG) so I doubt anyone will slab wooden nickels.

It looks like NGC has certified at least one.

Interestingly, it appears to be die-struck and not printed. It actually is "certified" with an assigned grade, too.

I checked with ANACS and ICG and asked about holdering Depression Era wooden nickels. ANACS said "no". ICG will holder them with "Genuine" or "Authentic" as opposed to a grade.

    Interesting...

Even though the medal says "wooden nickel" right on it, I don't consider it to be one. It is a medal struck in wood. There are a number of them from that general era.

Its Interesting that wood will take - and hold - that amount if detail when struck.
