This coin was highly doctored even in the 1970's. I was in a coin shop one year around that time, the dealer and I were chatting, and he told me that recently he had bought a doctored 1909S-VDB from someone who came into his shop. Usually the scamming "method" was adding an S to a 1909-VDB coin which is an inexpensive… -

This is exactly what I was talking about. The scammers targeted the 100 oz Engelhard extruded silver bars since the end of the bars is flat and can be easily repaired after the silver is removed. I wouldn't doubt that other brands of bars were also targeted by the scammers. -
