Re: Alice Paul on a Spouse Coin
<< <i>Is it cost feasible for the mint to produce only 3k mintage commemorative coins. Point will be reached where they could be losing money on this series. Fed Gov't is now very aware of waste as we can now see with the Presidential Dollars. >> When you consider the cost of the design, planchets, labor, dies, packaging,… -
A Survey of U.S. Anti-Slavery Tokens - Part 2, The Civil War Tokens
Since some members expressed an interest in part two of this series, I have decided to post it. When I was a coin dealer, collectors often asked me, “Are there any anti-slavery Civil War tokens?” The answer is yes, but the number of varieties is lower than you might think given that slavery was the primary cause of the… -
Re: NAC Low Relief Satin PR61 1922 Peace Dollar Help
I can say with near certainty that is not a satin proof Peace dollar. There are numerous contact marks and surface abrasions and rim cuts most likely indicating time in a mint bag. The rim is not hard cut but sloping as you can see near the date well. The high points on the obverse show significant signs of rub,… -
Re: Carson City Mint bag was probably used for gold
This might be really stupid, but looking at the shape of the bag, isn't it possible that it could have been used to store dies between use? I can imagine that very small bits of metal could stick to a die and then fall off when the die was returned to this bag. I don't believe that the mint ever stored gold bars in… -
Re: EDIT: Grade is In & I'm NOT happy - NEWP - Merc Variety...what do you think PCGS will do with th
Is this what Mercury Dime Registry Set collecting has come to? If you liked the coin before sending it to PCGS just what in the heck does a 1 point difference make? From your picture I say you were lucky to get a 5 out of the coin. I would have looked for a 4 out of it with a shot at 5. If it got 6 I would fall over in… -
Re: Tribute to our fallen, 6 years today
<< <i>Props to you Cladiator. Seeing the list of the names of all of the persons who died six years ago has a major impact. How can anyone not realize and believe that our Country and the rest of the non Islamic world are in the cross hairs of evil persons who will accept nothing less than our conversion, enslavement or… -
Re: 1989 No P Quarter - error, variety, or neither?
The type 2 1922 Plain cent is a die state. It is not a die variety because the "D" was not left off the die. It simply wore off as the die was overused. The other two 1922 Plain cents could be called mint errors of a sort. It seems they were caused by filled dies. This quarter also falls into the mint error category. The… -
Re: On how many coins is it apparent what year it was minted even if the date is worn away?
Interesting -- I'll bet that many coins would fit this profile. Certainly many key date coins do, if only because people have studied die characteristics to ensure they're getting a genuine copy. But I'll bet there are other more common dates that would fit this profile too. I'd think most of the early 19th century coinage… -

Re: Is the One Ounce Gold Enhanced Uncirculated Coin on the mint website new?
I based my purchase on wanting the coin, and frankly falling for the written wording of what it was to look like. As you well know, we had zero worthwhile images of it prior to release, save one HSN presentation/sales pitch that NJ clued me in on. That did it for me. Having it in hand confirms it was all worthwhile! That’s…
