Poll - Should modern sets be considered for PSA Set Hall of Fame Induction

Well another year has passed and no new modern card sets were inducted into the PSA Set Hall of Fame. Sure, there were more 1986-87 Fleer Basketball sets added but that set has been in the Hall of Fame beginning in 2003. Also one autograph set was inducted. It was the 1985-1997 Perez-Steele Great Moments Postcards Baseball Autograph Set. I guess that was a little progress. As of now, those are the only two post 1980 sets in the PSA Set Hall of Fame. Check out the above poll.

I totally agree. Of all the sets that I've worked on, the two I'm most proud of are my 1985 Topps Mini set and my 1990 Donruss Aqueous set. Both are popular with collectors, particularly player collectors, and both are INSANELY tough to start much less complete. Seems to me that either or both should at least get a "hey, that seems almost semi-worthy." Oh well.

Interesting topic. Thanks for posting. I feel better already. image

I believe more emphasis is placed on the age and monetary value for the PSA Set Hall of Fame sets rather than the actual art and difficulty of assembling the highest grade set in any category or era. Sets from the 80's are now 27 years old or more. The players inducted into their respective Halls of Fame don't get in because of how much money they made. They get in for being the best of their era. I believe that is what should happen with the PSA Set Hall of Fame.

    Hey Bob,
I looked at your 1990 Donruss Aqueous set. That set is very impressive. I read about those cards and it was interesting how they were looking for a different printing process.
    Very cool and rare image
Definitely a Hall of Fame worthy set.

    Hey Bob,

I completely agree with you regarding the sets from the late 80s and early 90s getting older. Sets like your 1990 Donruss Aqueous (which BTW yours is off the hook) are tough. My 1990 Donruss Learning Series has been a tough chase to get in high grade, due to the cards being sent to schools. I've been working on my set for over 8 years and still need to find several upgrades.

This is a great thread and a great topic. I without a doubt believe "modern sets" should be considered for induction. I quote the word modern, because, and I could be wrong, but wasn't anything 1980 and later considered modern? If that's still the case then that should be addressed as I've been assembling an all PSA 10 1980 Topps baseball set for the past 4 years, and am down to just 89 cards needed for completion. I would put the difficulty level with completing this in high grade with any 1970's issue.

With all of that said, my main focus of collecting is the 1980's for baseball. My childhood was the mid-late 80's and early 90's, and these cards have the most meaning to me from a sentimental standpoint. I know that the mid-80's and later, (my cut off year for collecting is 1994), gets a bad rap due to overproduction and some poor designs, but all facets of collecting should be acknowledged. You shouldn't have to be a millionaire with a 1961 Topps set with a GPA of 9.50 to be acknowledged by PSA. Please don't take that to be a jealous statement as anyone would love to own a set that nice, but why couldn't an all PSA 10 set of 1985 Topps baseball be acknowledged if one gets completed? I'd like to think it would due to the time and energy spent to assemble a 792 card set of that size....sorry for the ramblings but this comes from a """"modern"""" card collector who feels there is more to the world than 1952 Topps...

    Cheers men!

Edited to say that I can't believe anyone would vote no to this...there are certain modern issues out there like the ones already mentioned in this thread that are just as difficult to assemble as vintage issues...no matter the value...let's promote some newer sets to keep younger collectors invested in trying to better their collections as well as giving them something to look forward to. At the end of the day, I realize issues like these are minor compared to other things in the world, but still.

We are talking about 1980 to present. Currently there are 2 different post 1979 sets in the Set Registry Hall of Fame. They are 1986-87 Fleer Basketball Set and the 1985-1997 Perez-Steele Great Moments Postcards Baseball Autograph Set. Just looking for a little love for some fantastic newer sets.

As a modern collector at heart, I understand the desire to have a "H.o.F.' worthy set. I can't guarantee that PSA looks at every set to see if it qualifies for the H.o.F., but I imagine that they do.

You have to ask yourself what qualifies as a H.o.F. set. A set that someone sits around eBay and waits for all of the common modern cards to come by in PSA 10's, or one that takes years to build, has few cards printed, and is extremely sensitive to condition.

Sets that come to mind would be:

    1991 Topps Desert Shield baseball
    2001 Topps Employee baseball
Any base set from the 1980's any sport in all PSA 10
Any completed parallel sets such as a 2006 Topps Allen & Ginter mini black boarder in PSA 10.
Any combination of sets such as 1980-1989 Topps baseball completed in a high grade.

These are just some sets I may be working on/or have knowledge about. I believe it would take a special set to gain the H.o.F. status.

    JMHO.

    Later, Paul.

I would say some modern Player Master Sets should get consideration. Some of those require collecting cards from hundreds and hundreds of different sets.

With other Modern Sets, a person with unlimited resources could buy and open a ton of vending or rack cases and complete a PSA 10 set.

But to answer the original question.... Of course they should.

only hundreds...the Favre master set is currently at 5514 cards. i am at 75% completion but probably won't sniff the HOF unless its 100% complete. which it almost never will be as there are probably over 12,000 cards that can be included in the set. there are 2652 different card/variants on just his flight to 420 topps TD pass set alone that would qualify to be added to the set.

    jradke4,

I really feel your pain. That is mind boggling and would be, for me, depressing.

Fortunately, my main focus for a Master Set has been Magic Johnson, who retired (the second time) in 1996. This was before the mega-explosion occurred of individual cards.

I wouldn't be able to justify the cost to have so many cards graded which otherwise are worth less than $1. I have already pushed past my original limit for that in a set which has less than 20% of the Favre set (I imagine).

I am buying and trading for RC's of Wilt Chamberlain, George Mikan, Bill Russell, Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, and Bob Cousy!

Here is a breakdown of the PSA Set Hall of Fame sets by year. The 1950's were definitely the golden years for card collecting. Looks like even sets from the 1970's could stand some admiration.

    1800-1899 - 0
    1900-1909 - 4
    1910-1919 - 13
    1920-1929 - 0
    1930-1939 - 34
    1940-1949 - 18
    1950-1959 - 72
    1960-1969 - 32
    1970-1979 - 8
    1980-1989 - 23* (Only 2 different sets)
    1990-1999 - 0
    2000-2016 - 0

    * There are only 2 different 1980's sets which are (1) 1985-1997 Perez-Steele Great Moments Postcards Baseball Autograph Set and (22) 1986-87 Fleer Basketball Sets which are all perfect PSA 10 sets.

    Modern Sets Matter!

I think 1981 is usually viewed as the beginning of "modern." As for the difficulty of the 1980 set, I'd say it's in the same general ballpark as 1978. It's certainly going to be difficult to complete in uniform 10, but sets from 1971-1977 are certainly much tougher overall. I mean it's getting tough to even get an 8 submitting '71s.

That 2001 Topps Employee set would be tough! Not sure how many have been opened, but they have extreme problems with the gloss adhering to other cards. I am still looking for a decent Greg Maddux example!

The Don Mattingly Master Set is one of the tougher player sets I have seen and two are knocking on the door of being 100% complete on the 1500 items set. If somebody does make 100%, I would nominate them in a hurry! I have the #1 spot on the Greg Maddux Master Set and not even 50%. The breadth of collecting it takes is surreal as you have to have the knowledge of so many issues and have your eyes peeled for graded or ungraded examples.

I only collect rc's of potential hofers and heritage cards of Jeter and Posey for modern.
I couldn't even imagine doing a Favre master set. Jeter either. We all collect different things based on the love of the sport/player. That's what keeps PSA and the registry going. All sets need to be considered as all are equally important to someone which makes them important to us all.

I never understood why Hatch's 1978 Topps Baseball , which was the first Topps set that was completed in all 10's was NOT even honored or acknowledged by PSA .

Once again congratulations and so cool!!
