Baseball Post-war HOF Registry

Players like Warren Spahn, Jackie Robinson, Larry Doby, et al, have multiple choices of their cards to include in the Registry.

Why can't that same option be given for cards from the 80s and up? Why not a choice among Topps, Fleer and Donruss for 1982 Cal Ripken? Or, a choice of the many, many cards of Ken Griffey, Jr?

    The Post-War HOF Rookies set is supposed to include the single most valuable rookie card for each player. I'm not a big fan of the vintage either/or options and would be strictly opposed to modern either/or options that would only serve to water down a great set. If you want to collect rookies other than the ones that are accepted in the set, you should look into the HOF Players set. It accepts any card of a HOF player.

    To add to this...many players have rookie card sets where every rookie is inc. Also, vintage sets don't have multiple choices. At best 2 cards are involved.

    From a logistics standpoint on the modern cards it would be difficult configuring the registry to accept a multitude of possibilities for a given slot. For older cards like Spahn, Robinson, and Doby where there might be only two possibilities to choose from, it's easy to add them both and weight each one. You get to Ripken, with what 4 possibilities, but it's still easy and manageable and makes sense to allow a collector to choose among the 4 and just have a different weighting if there's a significant difference in value. You get to newer issues where there could be dozens to hundreds of choices in a given slot and it would be extremely difficult adding all those possibilities. It doesn't make sense that only one specially selected rookie card is the only card that matters to all the participants. There should be a few more choices where the choices are obvious to experienced collectors and ability to weight the choice make sense.
