Retiring 10 All Time #1 Dollar Sets

I will be retiring 10 All Time # 1 sets and 5 All time #2 dollar registry sets. The sets will range from early dollars through Eisenhower dollars, including my complete dollar set with major varieties. The coins will be featured as the "Sonoran Monsoon Collection" at the Heritage Auction during the January 2016 fun show.

The sale may be of particular interest to Eisenhower dollar collectors as there will be 26 Ike top pops available. Other highlights include Early dollar varieties, 1851 and 1852 dollars in AU-58, some top pop Morgan VAM's, and much more. You can click my signature line below to view the sets.

I am looking forward to seeing the new #1 dollar sets that will emerge early next year. I will be keeping my SBA, Sacagawea, and Presidential dollar sets. That along with some yearly mint sets will keep my collecting bug alive.

Thanks for putting up with my little spam announcement.

Joe

great set and good luck with the sale - I will be watching the sale and bidding on a few.

BTW- why is the 1862 seated dollar that you got only in good with all the others in better grade - Not meant to be a negative comment just curious?

The complete dollar sets are a large undertaking involving a lot of coins, spanning over 220 years, and I was only able to upgrade when the opportunity presented itself in terms of availability and my budget. I just did not get around to upgrading it.

    Hello
Have all of your Coins been sent to CAC?
Were any of your sets reviewed by PCGS for upgrades
    and pluses?

I never sent coins into CAC myself, as I never was into the sticker thing. I have over the years sent coins into PCGS for upgrades, photos, and pedigree holders over the years. Some of those coins had CAC stickers on them at the time I sent them in, but were removed by PCGS when reholdered. I never bothered to resend them to CAC. I know Heritage sent some (several?) into CAC before listing them in the auction. They felt it would help bring a better price. I suppose they have a point.

How are the auction results? Did Heritage help you to get the top price?

Not to speak for Joe (by any means) but I was personally a little surprised to see that the Ikes may not have been sent in for regrade or even possibly for CAC stickering ahead of the sale. Joe can correct this if I am mistaken.

But, case in point, the 1973-P Ike was THE NICEST I had ever personally seen in 30+ years of searches. Sure, I have no doubt there is perhaps another coin or two out there of this quality, but IMHO the coin is worthy of a world class MS Ike collection. It is a pop 2/0 coin today I believe, but it may have been pop 1/0 when I sold it a few years back. In any event, the coin was sold without a CAC sticker yesterday and I would be shocked if the coin actually had failed to get one upon submission (hence, my thought the set never made it to CAC).
Just my two cents. Please carry on.

My guess is that most buyers assumed that these coins have been tried for upgrade and are maxed out, and every coin that doesn't have a sticker was refused one by CAC.
(note: I realize that it was a desire of the seller to have his name on the coins, but the name may be be taken off every coin that upgrades.)

Hearing that there may have been some coins that did have a CAC sticker prior to consignment at HA, and were not restickered prior to auction, is startling.
I fear the seller may have been given horrible, if any, counseling prior to the sale (and, I'm sorry to say, ignored much one could learn from even a periodic look at these boards).

Personally, I would only consider consigning anything and everything I sell in a major auction through Wondercoin as he has proven to me the value of his services.
But generally, with coins like these, I would never sell them in this fashion without consulting Wondercoin, Laura or another experienced dealer.

    These dealers would:
    A. Review every coin for upgrade potential before auction, and upgrade them, even if it took upwards of a year or two to get. Then,
    B. Submit every coin deserving a sticker to CAC before auction.
    C. Never allow a sellers fee to be owing to the auction house from their consignor.
The above should require no effort on the seller's part.
Many top dealers do this for their customers all the time!
I recently had a $20k coin upgraded to a $60k coin before selling at auction. It took Wondercoin about two years to get the coin to that level after incremental upgrades that didn't achieve the goal, which was, of course, the coin's true grade, and true value.

IMHO, if these Ike dollars were stickered by QA or CAC, they could have fetched 30% to 100% more since I just checked HA prices......

In these days, without a sticker, folks always assume these modern coins had been tried before.

    Thank you Registrycoin.

Jcping... Of course MS Ikes are the only modern coin set CAC even stickers, so your comment obviously pertains only to that set. But, I believe it was fairly obvious (to me at least) that this particular Ike set never made it to CAC. All one had to do was look at coins like the 1973-P or 1978-D in PCGS-MS66+ to confirm that. And, I agree that the stickers would have likely added strong value to the pieces that qualified.

Agree image my personal preference on Ike dollars is QA. I did see enough CAC Ike dollars that I don't like but, up-to-now, I did not see one QA Ike dollar that fails my standards.
