Wanted to Buy (WTB) 1988 Topps PSA 9 & 10

I'm interested in 1988 Topps baseball in PSA 9 or PSA 10. I am building the standard set, no Tiffany, no Traded.

Here is a link to my Registry. You may notice that I need 665 cards to complete the set. I've only been at it for a few months, and I'm chipping away at the 28% that has NO grade, through submissions.

Rather than post a want list, I'll post a HAVE list. If it's on the list, I don't need it.

Thanks for looking!

    I just upgraded my #102 Larkin to a 10 so I've got a 9 available if you're interested.

That is definitely a labor of love! What is the significance of the set to you?

I remember opening packs and packs, rack packs, wax boxes, buying, trading and hoarding these when they came out.

Are you looking for the 778 Comstock error for your set?

Is that still a tough card nowadays?

  • Building this PSA set is based largely on nostalgia. The 1988 set were the first cards I collected as a kid. I had a paper route, and would spend all of my hard-earned tips on Wax packs that I would collect and trade with my brother and our friends. Those cards were all lost to time, but can be bought now for next to nothing.

The decision to attempt the PSA set comes from my frustration with modern cards and infinite parallels. I've been collecting player rainbows for years, but can never keep up. With this, there is a set number of cards I am trying to acquire, and I could someday complete the set.

As for the Comstock, I have the corrected 'Blue Letters' in a PSA 10, but I would definitely be interested in the error in a 9 or 10 if you have one.
  • Thank you LarkinCollector for the PSA 9 Barry Larkin! One more off the list....

I predict that you will have infinitely more fun collecting this set than you ever did with the modern parallel stuff.

I did the same thing several years back, with the first set I collected, and loved every second of it (still do, in fact, even though I had to sell off much of the collection).

You will be shocked to learn that even a modern issue like 1988 Topps will have its own idiosyncrasies which make it challenging to complete in high grade. I am trying to recall which singles I could never seem to find well centered as I opened countless packs back in '88. I look forward to hearing about your progress...

Glad it arrived safely and I was able to assist in your quest a little bit. Good luck and have fun getting it completed!
  • I have an 88 vending case but I'm sure s/h costs you more than it would be worth to get them. Where are you pulling your cards to submit?

  • The cards I've submitted so far have all come from a case of Rak-paks I purchased from Kruk Cards. I also bought two brown box complete sets on eBay for $0.99 plus shipping, but there are centering problems with the sets. You can tell from looking from the top that the set is divided into 6 sections, likely one for each press sheet. If one card is off-center in a section, they all are.

As for idiosyncrasies, I've noticed that there are no PSA 10 #405 Dwight Gooden cards. I bought a 100 count lot that was supposedly pulled from vending boxes, and every one was off center. The card is positioned near the upper right corner on the press sheet, so that may have something to do with the centering.
  • Epic mail day! 12 new cards for my 1988 Topps PSA set. With the exception of the Puckett All-Star (pop 19) they are all pop 1.

Congrats on the new additions. Enjoy your quest ... it seems like it will be a fun (and at times frustrating) project. This is what collecting is all about! Have fun and keep us updated.

    STAY HEALTHY!

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
  • I have a number of 1988 Topps, but they have not been graded.
