Stolen coin alert! 1864 with L PR65RB PCGS CAC/EEPS 28899497

EagleEyeEagleEye Posts: 7,676 ✭✭✭✭✭
Today at the Baltimore show this coin was found missing. the coin was last seen at about 3:00 on 7/17/15.

The retail price is $127,500. The images of the coin are on my web site and also on ebay. I can't seem to link the images from my iPad, so if someone could do so, I would appreciate it.

Baltimore Police case number #01-150708173

Please spread the word on this and keep an eye out. There re only 20 examples and they are all tracked when they appear on the market, so it is hopefully unsaleable to any knowledgeable dealer.

Thanks all.

So SICK that so many people are apparently so grossly entitled that they feel ok to just TAKE what someone else has worked very hard to earn for themselves.... Seriously makes me fume. Good luck, I hope this sorts itself out in a timely manner.

One of the dealers, who had a large number of coins stolen at a previous Baltimore show now keeps video cameras pointed in the direction of his cases.

yesterday, a person reached in one of the cases, grabbed old currency, and ran. Brain Raines, was one of the people who saw him run. The thief ran out the back, police followed shortly after but did not catch him.

Nobody said that it has been missing for a day, they said that it was for sure last seen at that time. Regardless though, what exactly does your question have to do with anything? Have you ever been a dealer with a table at a coin show?

Are you saying this is a common occurrence? Missing 125K coins? If so, you need a new line of work! And if you thought my question was irrelevant, you better re-read yours.

That is a tough one. I don't what I'd do if I lost or had stolen a coin like that. Beyound the financial considerations with only 20 or so Proofs known, this is a great numismatic treasure that would be a great loss to the hobby if it is truly gone.

    I am so sorry. image

It's probably going to be very tough to sell that coin as it is just too rare and easily traceable. I wonder what the thief was thinking?

Is there a way to notify the local pawnshops as well as any local Baltimore-Washington area dealers?

Most thugs aren't that bright. He was probably thinking, "I'm gonna pawn this and get me a bottle of Hennessey." Good luck at the pawn shop with that one.

Sorry to hear about this. Unfortunately it looks like whoever stole it targeted it specifically. That being said, most likely they either a) have a buyer for it (yes, stolen items are sold on black market, thieves don't steal for their own collection, unless he has an addiction) or b) plan to have it off the market for such a long time it is 'forgotten' about. There is a good pedigree marker above the first feather though, so that helps.

Hopefully there will be a "c": idiot tried to sell it back to you!

Yep, there were 5 police at the show. Sure they will catch up with him soon. Many surveillance cameras, he registered also with a photo id, which is required.

Curious though if the two are linked to the same person.

Terrible image Was the price written on the slab at all? That always strikes me as potentially risky. Yes, it's convenient for collectors to not have to ask, but it makes it much easier for a thief to pick out the expert-level valuable coins.

Perhaps it would be helpful to hide prices, but that's admittedly just one layer of a deterrent.

I'm guessing who ever stole this coin knows what he's doing. He'll probably crack it out of the slab and will probably dip it to hide its origin.

Rick... You may or may not recall the 1919-S SLQ in PCGS-MS67FH ($125,000 coin at the time) that went missing at a show several years back. It ended up being submitted to NGC raw not too long thereafter and they recognized it immediately and the owner quickly got back his coin. Best of luck while you wait this out. Wondercoin.

<< <i>Man that's just terrible. Hope you get it back soon Rick.

Is it me or does it seem like a very common occurrence at the Baltimore show? Of course, thieves are everywhere, but it seems like more and more the words "stolen" and "Baltimore" get spoken in the same sentence AND in a numismatic context. I'm truly hoping that Whitman notices the trend and considers moving the show to a different city. Yes, it can happen in that different city as well, but I feel that Baltimore is getting more and more dangerous in the past few years. The Inner Harbor area is truly an enclave surrounded by some very, very bad people.

    Dennis >>

Rick - hope you recover the coin very quickly

Dennis - I agree with you that security is of utmost importance. I would suggest that show sponsors try to move around show locations each year.

Absolutely awful, makes my stomach turn!

There seem to be theft incidents of some sort at 70%+ of the shows I have attended over the past few years in various states. I generally hear the stories after the fact, but I did see a guy in hand cuffs last year!

This is really a sickening event. I appreciate your concern. It is important to get the message out so that this coin, wherever and whenever it turns up it is identified. In my book I trace the pedigree of every single example that has been on the market since the 1950's. I have excellent insurance, but this is the first time I have had to file a claim. We are lucky to have such a concerned support team in this business. We look out for one another.
