Got these two bills today with odd counter stamps.

The $20 seems to have a hello kitty with a possible signature.

While the $100 has an embossed stamp that says "CAMBIO $ NEUVO SOL"(or Change $ New Sol when translated), which is a counterstamp they use in Peru close to the famous Machu Picchu site. When tourist go to see the ruins and use larger US bills to pay for stuff the bills get marked immediately because lots of fakes are running around in Peru.

Just thought it was interesting never seen one floating up here.

About 1 in 10 $100's seem to have some random chop mark on them. You could go broke trying to collect them all!

Would love to see if someone chased down where some of them came from though.

I think the mark on the twenty is a legalize marijuana stamp.

Just spent a "chopmarked" $20 today. It was embossed with Chinese characters along the right side of the note. It was the first time I had seen this before.

I would have never of guessed that but now I see it. The kitty is high and saying NOW or WOW. Thanks Bill5FRN nice info.

SmallSizedGuy that is what I found strange it was embossed I've seen hundreds of ink stamps but his was the first embossing. I guess stamps can be faked too easily these days.

I have always presumed most of these to be foreign bankers authentication marks. Many are in Arabic. I have documented over 100 (maybe 200?) different ones from the mid 1990s through about 2004 but quit a few years ago. Someday, maybe a book or list will be compiled and I would be happy to share my limited research.

Do they worth more than the face value?

The largest percentage of these, by far, occurs on $100s. Some can be found on $50s and $20s but they seem to be much scarcer on lower denoms.

Found this thread as I was searching before posting the question - what are these stamps?

Have two $20s in my pocket. One has a small black stamp "Glady$" and a small blue circular stamp that says CAMBIO MJA around the edge with a dollar sign in the middle. The other has a blue stamp JJ with CAMBIOS underneath in a semi-circle, a blue circle stamp that says CASA <unreadable> around the inside of the circle and another green circle stamp with the letters JVC inside.

Last week I remember noticing some stamps on another $20 but didn't pay close attention. I would be very surprised if all three of these bills had been out of the country - the odds are against it.

Anyone know what the purpose of these stamps are, if we assume they were never out of the US?

"Cambio" is Spanish for "change" as in a foreign exchange broker, so these notes were indeed out of the US and probably went through South or Central America. Their purpose is authentication.

I'm going to keep my eyes open for these just to see how often they show up.

Well, that didn't take long. Hit the ATM for $40 after work, and both $20 bills have an assortment of stamps.

Bill 1:
$K.S
Chima
an oval design, can't make it out
"Antonia" over "20" in a rectangular box
a small hot air balloon
"DOLORES/Rolando/EUROS" in a circle

Bill 2:
"13" over "JEP" (very small)
G.C.
a bird with outstretched wings
"CORPORACIONES" over (unreadable) in a circle
"$" over JULIO

Indeed it appears all the language is Spanish, which is a bit odd since there are very few Spanish-speaking people in our area.
