July - Mail Call - what have you picked up?

I've wanted this auto for some time.

1957 Base Rules Playing and Scoring.

It's about 4x6"

And has a pre-accident Roy Campanella sig.

edit: the other sig is Happy Felton

"Happy Felton's Knothole Gang" was seen weekday afternoons and on Saturday afternoons on WOR Ch. 9 from Friday, April 21, 1950 until station execs finally closed up Happy Felton's knothole in the ball parks for good on Saturday, August 24, 1957.

It was a sports show that helped young baseball players improve their baseball playing skills.

Happy Felton (a former vauldville, stage and radio comic actor and musical entertainer) & the members of NYC's most successful little league teams would see professional players ultilize their ball playing techniques live on the fields of the Brooklyn Giants, Brooklyn Dodgers and N.Y. Yankees Stadiums.

After seeing their heroes play on the fields, the kids were given the chance to play against themselves on the fields and earn the chance to win scholarships for their schools and toy prizes. Plus tickets to upcoming baseball games.

    Beautiful piece mike!!

I've always been intrigued by the whole pre-accident/post-accident Campanella autograph thing--if i'm not mistaken I think he's the only player who such a designation exists for?!?!

    Thanx Bill.

I think you may be right on that one David. Thanx. None come to mind that had prominence.

I guess I'm the only one buying right now?

Added another 52T to a small subset of centered cards - my goal is to stay "low" and never go anywhere near "hi"

Actually got this last year as a present from my dad. I wanted it slabbed, so included it with a bulk submission. I was pleasantly surprised when I got it back a few days ago. The scan quality is pretty poor.

  • Very nice with the 10 Mattingly.

Love any Star cards. I see they used the same image as 86 Fleer used for the Sir Chuck.

I actually picked this one up last month but didn't post on it.

I used to post separately on my games but this is not the forum for that kind of stuff.

    So....

Pla-Ball Game - Pandora Products Co., Birmingham, MI - 1930s

Got the date off the baseball game forum list - I wonder if this is the kind of game that could've been produced right into the early 50s?

    image

The game is approx. a foot high and 30" wide - I'm gonna guess that it could be an "indoor" game but ya better have some space?

It does come with plywood bases - about 7" square.

    image

So, I'm missing the instructions and balls - according to an internet sale, the balls are about the size of a golf ball.

So, if we could somehow design a game to be played in the basement, e.g., I would use a ping pong or small wiffle ball? Tho, according to one sale, the ball is wood - now that would be fun to chase?

On the one end is a "knob" when pulled - home plate drops down - I'm guessing that will make it hard to hit?

    image

Came with the original box and cat!

    image

    image

I bought it since it was so unusual and had never seen it before. He wanted 150 and accepted 135 - not cheap but not overly expensive either.

This is one of those games that I could see being a dismal failure since a kid would have to kneel down - hit the ball - jump up and run bases while kids make a mad dash for a small ball and do something with it?

It'll make a nice display piece when I have display space.

OK - all you game collectors out there! Jump in! image

    What can I say James.

    You're on fire!

That's a nice Clemente. I finally upgraded my set with a near perfectly centered one this year.

Those 57s are well centered - that's quite a treat - especially the Drysdale.

You hit the jackpot on the Rose, Todd.

    Well centered - a beauty!

I remember someone at Tuff Stuff writing that the 64 and 66T sets were boring.

Not to me. I like the simplicity.

Clockwork...Didn't u have an 8.5 '64 Rose that bumped to a 9? If I recall...the registration was off on that one. This is a very nice copy! Congrats!

Same card. I sold it to someone a couple years ago and always regretted it. I had a chance to pick it back up and took advantage, albeit at a hefty cost. Yes, it's still my greatest success in reviewing cards at PSA, as I bought it off eBay as an 8.5

Thanks for remembering and the kind words

    Very nice.

Hell of a nice card Travis.

Looks real strong. I've got him in a T3 but no where that nice - an 8 in a T3 would cost you an arm, leg AND kidney!

Went to Francisco U. in Ohio near Pittsburgh Nick.

Been to Three Rivers and even saw them raze Forbes Field.

It's a hell of a nice city - nice architecture - even walked up the Cathedral of Learning at Pitt. which I think is like 40 floors!

I recommend any one who goes to Pittsburgh? Hit Primanti's for one of their patented sandwich with the fries and slaw and stuff! image

Just got this one in the mail. I have always like the 56 Mantle and have a very strong PSA 8, and had an 8.5 that I reluctantly has to sell to find part of my Mantle rookie. Grabbed this one and l/r is dead on, and gloss and image along with corners as very strong.

Not derail this thread, but the family and I were in Pittsburgh in early June, our first time. Very cool city, we were there on the Thursday night when the Pegiuns were home playing game 6. City was hopping. Went to a Pirates game that Saturday. Would definitely go back!!
