Very interesting. Is this common for yamakatsu sets? Any idea why there are different variations and which are more scarce?

It's definitely not common for Yamakatsu and it might indicate a second print run. I'll have to look into it more to see if any one is more scarce than the other.

I've seen 15-20 Andre cards from that set....all were "dark" background, so a colored background would be extremely rare if it exists.

I did get a "colored" version of one of the variations when I opened a sample pack. Now I have to determine which "series" that is.

Oops I think I might have had a "green" variation of the inoki and didn't even know about it... Are there 2 versions of this card?

    Eagles,

I haven't seen a dark version of that card yet. Not saying it doesn't exist.
  • SumoMenkoManSumoMenkoMan Posts: 1,269 ✭✭✭
So these variations exist in the 1976 Yamakatsu All Japan Pro Wrestling set as well. Here is card #30, Dory Funk Jr.

#17 has the pink background. #34 has the green background. But they are the same backs (different numbers of course) and same image on front.

Same thing with card # 19 and #27. Same backs (different numbers) and same image on front only different background colors.

The following are the same numbered cards with identical backs (same numbers)...the only difference is the background color on front.

    #5: Dark and Green
    #7: Dark and Blue
    #10: Dark and Green
    #17: Dark and Pink
    #24: Dark and Blue
    #30: Dark and Blue
    #37: Dark and Green
    #38: Dark and Blue

Not sure on the checklist when you have nothing mentioned, what is it?

I looked through my stack and these are the ones that I have that are colored.....

    9 blue
    13 green
    14 blue
    18 green
    28 pink
    33 blue

    15 pink (winner card)

I went in and added some info for clarification.

I have the same cards with the same background you do for 9,13,14,18,28,33. I don't know of any variation (natural background) for those cards.

Interesting. Number 17 and number 34 are the same cards except 17 has a pink background and 34 has a green background. So your saying your number 17 has a green background, right?

Sounds like there are 2 variations of # 34. Pink and natural background. Cool find. A variation of 25 or 29 would be cool

Sumo any idea why there are variations and if one is more rare than the other? The inoki would be cool to get slabbed. It's definitely his rookie card and he was a heavey weight champ.

King, can you post a scan of the back of the Andre? That's another great find

I knew that I had the one Karl Gotch card but it was on my "needed" list when it didn't have to be. I am seven cards from completing this set after I loaded all of the cards a few minutes ago on the PSA registry (31 slabbed, two raw). I am pretty stoked to have 33 of the 40 considering they do not come up too often. The search continues........

I should have a few more for you next month. I'm close on the 76 set too. Less than 10 I think.

I'm working at upgrading my 74 set now. Trying to get better cards as some of mine are on the low end.

That is the plan Sumo. I'll take what I can get and hopefully have each card in a PSA 5 or higher as a threshold. The 1974 set does not have the American star power of the 1976 set but having the two Andres are huge, there are numerous Antonio Inokis which is the first year he ever appeared on a card, and I am also a fan of the Karl Gotch cards in there.

I completed this basic set. I just need to get ten of the cards slabbed and I will be up to 100% complete. I am sitting at 75% right now on this 40 card set. I will try to add some upgrades when I see some really sharp cards for a fair price. My goal that may take me a few years is to move on to the 1976 set and complete that one.

How many more for the 1976 set? I have all my cards ready for submission to complete the 1974 set, just waiting on a few more cards from other orders to fill out the submission form. I am just halfway on the 1976 set myself. I'd love to get more of them but the process is really, really slow as you know.
