1829 Large 1c Medium/small letters - Is it really that tough in better grades?

Seems pricey in VF+ grades. Is it that tough of a variety?

Three Newcomb varieties comprise the 1829 Medium letters type- N3, N5 and N9. The finest known N3 and N5 examples reside in PCGS MS64BN holders, both are ex: Naftzger (Goldberg 2/09: lot 219 and 221) and sold for $12K each. Lot 230 in the same sale, an 1829 N-9 in PCGS AU58 (CC#3) sold for $2875.

Here is my 1829 N-3, ex: Naftzger:

The 3 varieties Rays listed for this type are R3/R4 in terms of scarcity - however, a VF35 (EAC grading) will make the
condition census for any of them. So yes, it is quite tough in the upper grades, with very few survivors at the AU/Unc
    level.
