40th Anniversary of First NASCAR Trading Card Set (1972)

I saw the Garry Carter thread last year and the 365 Day Golf thread this year. Since this is the 40th anniversary of NASCAR trading cards I thought I would do something similar to educate my fellow PSA members. Who knows there might be a few folks that pick up the sport and also might allow the closet fans to hold their heads high? 2012 will be a great year for NASCAR cards and a yearlong celebration of 40 years of NASCAR Trading cards.

    Day 1.
The first NASCAR cards, if you want to call them that, were part of the 1970 Fleer Dragstrips set. It is made up of 10 blank back cards but only 2 of the 10 cards are photos of NASCAR cars. Most of the cards are of Indy cars and STP president Andy Granatelli who would be the person behind the first dedicated NASCAR trading card set.

This card is of Darel Dieringer driving the #16 Bud Moore Lincoln - Mercury car. The card was autographed at the NASCAR HOF induction of Bud Moore.

    Day 2.

Here is the second NASCAR card in the 1970 Fleer Dragstrips set. The folks at Fleer in 1970 didn’t know the difference between NASCAR, Indy and Dragsters. This set has all three sports. This card depicts Dan Gurney's driving the Wood Brothers 121 Ford car.

Wrapper from the 1970 Fleer Dragster set. You got one blank back card with some stickers.

  • Of all the race cars I think of when I hear Gurney's name I think stock cars is at the bottom of the list. Very interesting choice Fleer made.

hhmag70: "Of all the race cars I think of when I hear Gurney's name I think stock cars is at the bottom of the list. Very interesting choice Fleer made. "

The 1970 Fleer Dragstrips set is all over the road (pun intended) and shows cars from the 1965 - 1968. One note is that Andy Granatelli (Car Owner) is on 3 of the 10 cards with cars he had in the 1968 Indy 500. This is cataloged as a 1970 set but shows cars from 1968.
A year before this set was made (1969) Mario Andretti won the 1969 Indy 500 in a car owned by Andy Granatelli but this set has no Mario Andretti card.
Andy Granatelli is a racing legend and holds many records. He was also president of STP which leads us to Day3!

    Day 3.
Andy Granatelli was president of STP which was sponsoring NASCAR cars in the early 1970's as well as any other race cars. During his working years Mr. Granatelli was part racing innovator and part showmen. He still attends the Indy 500 race every year. He will be 89 in March 2012! Being the show promoter and being around Indy and NASCAR cars he met Ray Mann. Ray Mann, who took pictures of Indy and NASCAR drivers, produced the quarterly magazine Racing Pictorial. Together they produced the first NASCAR trading card set. Photos used for the set were taken by Ray Mann. These were given away at the NASCAR tracks during the 1972 season. Each card is unnumbered but in the standard 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 card format with information on the back about the driver and race results from 1971. There are 11 cards of 10 drivers.

Since these are unnumbered I will go in alphabetical order so the first card will be:

    1972 STP Bobby Allison (December 3, 1937 - Present)
    NASCAR Sprint Cup Statistics
Raced 25 years in 718 races with 85 Wins, 336 Top Fives, 446 Top Tens and 58 starting at the Pole.

NASCARD Radio.com take away: He raced for 25 years (1961 - 1988) and was the 1983 Champion. He finished 2nd in points 5 times and was named one of NASCAR's 50 Greatest Drivers. He did all this and more while driving for 14 different car owners! He was inducted in to the NASCAR Hall of Fame with the Class of 2011.

  • Thank you for starting this thread. I've been a hardcore NASCAR fan for about 15 years and I know very little about the history of the sport. Right now I collect 79 hockey and 76 Star Trek but maybe I can become interested in racing cards as a new project.

    Thanks again,

    Day 8. 1972 STP Set (Card 6 of 11)

    NASCAR Sprint Cup Statistics
Raced 27years in 536 races with 2 Wins, 63 Top Fives, 193 Top Tens and 1 starting at the Pole.

The race featured such drivers as Cale Yarborough, Junior Johnson, Pete Hamilton, and Donnie Allison. The winner was Langley, beating Yarborough to the line by about 3 feet on the last lap.

After he retired from racing he was the pace-car driver for Nascar's Winston Cup series, the top division of stock car racing. In late November of 1996 he was in Japan for the Suzuka Circuitland NASCAR race. He died at Suzuka General Hospital in Suzuka City, Japan, apparently of heart failure. He was 68.

    Day 9 - 1972 STP Set (Card 7 of 11)

1972 STP Fred Lorenzen (December 30, 1934 to Present)

    NASCAR Sprint Cup Statistics
Raced 12 years in 158 races with 26 Wins, 75 Top Fives, 84 Top Tens and 32 starting at the Pole.

NASCARD RADIO.COM take away: Raced 12 years (1956, 1960-67, 1970-1972) and never ran the full schedule of races. In 1963 he became the first driver to earn more than $100,000 and he only raced in 29 of the 55 races that year. Of those 29 races, in 1963, he finished in the top five 21 times. In 1964 he ran 16 races and won 8 of them! In 158 races he finished 5th or better in 75 of them, just less than half of them. Fred Lorenzen was named one of NASCAR's 50 Greatest Drivers.

    image

  • Lorenzen's stats must put him up there as one of the best per race racers ever. Was he underfunded? Why didn't he race in more races?

Here is a little about why he didn't race in all the events.
FRED LORENZEN . . . . . . by Steve Samples about half way down the page.

"it was generally understood in those days that top drivers did not enter the low pay races. Most factory drivers had worked their way to the big time by running dirt tracks and quarter milers, and few wanted to repeat the process. Especially for a 45% cut of a $1000 winner’s check. That’s why the names Roberts, Lorenzen, Turner, and others do not appear on NASCAR’s point champions list."

Also check out the trailer on "Speed Lovers" the movie he stared in. It's on NetFlix!

    Day 10 - 1972 STP Set (Card 8 of 11)
1972 STP Fred Lorenzen (December 30, 1934 to Present)
    NASCAR Sprint Cup Statistics
Raced 12 years in 158 races with 26 Wins, 75 Top Fives, 84 Top Tens and 32 starting at the Pole.

NASCARD RADIO.COM take away: Fred Lorenzen was the only driver to have two cards in this set. This puzzled me but after researching this subject for my upcoming NASCAR Trading Cards Book I think I have an answer. Andy Granatell and Fred Lorenzen knew each other. They were both Chicago guys and Lorenzen was in some of the races Granatelli put on in Chicago. When Lorenzen announced his intention to come out of retirement and race in 1971 STP was the sponsor. Lorenzen ran 14 races all for STP in 1971. Here is a 4 page article by Andy Ganatelli from Auto Racing July 1971 titled "Fred Lorenzen As I See Him" that was written the springsummer of the year he ran for STP.

One final note on Fred Lorezen: Fred was very close to Fireball Roberts and witnessed the crash that lead to Fireball Roberts death in 1964. I think this quote taken from Fred Lorenzen by Stan Kalwasinski sums it up.

“I quit way too early,” Lorenzen said in a 1985 interview with Circle Track magazine. “I was good for another five or six years. I was at my prime, but I’d won about everything there was to win and I had plenty of money. I was sick with stomach ulcers, and I was tired of traveling and living out of a suitcase. Most of all, the spark was gone; the candle was out; the king (Fireball Roberts) was dead. His death had a great influence and impact on me. He was my god and my teammate, and he was the best. He was the big cheese of the South. He was brains and throttle in a league by himself. I always wanted to be better then he was, so he pushed and drove me to excel.”

    Day 11 - 1972 STP Set (Card 9 of 11)
1972 STP Dave Marcis (March 1, 1941 to Present)
    NASCAR Sprint Cup Statistics
Raced 35 years in 883 races with 5 Wins, 94 Top Fives, 222 Top Tens and 14 starting at the Pole.

NASCARD RADIO.COM take away: Raced 35 years from 1968 to 2002 at age 60! When Dave Marcis retired, he was second on the all times starts list in NASCAR behind Richard Petty. Since then, Ricky Rudd has passed him, putting Marcis in third place on the list today. He was an independent owner/driver which means he had little or no factory support. One great quote from Dave Marcis is “We have done so much, with so little, for so long, that now we can do almost anything with nothing.” NASCAR Beginnings Featuring Dave Marcis

    Day 12 - 1972 STP Set (Card 10 of 11)
    1972 STP Benny Parsons (July 12, 1941 to January 16, 2007)
    NASCAR Sprint Cup Statistics
Raced 21 years in 526 races with 21 Wins, 199 Top Fives, 283 Top Tens and 20 starting at the Pole.

NASCARD RADIO.COM take away: Won the championship in 1973 and was named one of NASCAR's 50 Greatest Drivers.
Two scenes in Days of Thunder were inspired when he drove for Hendrick Motorsports in 1987 as a substitute for driver Tim Richmond. During the first lap of a race at Darlington Raceway, Parsons hit the wall and badly damaged his race car. He was able to continue, but had to make several pit stops for repairs. At one point, his crew chief, Harry Hyde refused to allow Parsons to pit because he and the crew were on an ice cream break. Another scene in the film was inspired by a real-life incident at Martinsville Speedway involving Parsons and the notoriously cantankerous Hyde: Hyde sarcastically told Parsons to hit the pace car on a restart because it was the only thing on the track Parsons had not hit.

He began announcing as a pit reporter in the 1980s on ESPN and TBS while he was still racing part-time. After permanently retiring from racing in 1988, Parsons became a broadcaster – first on ESPN, and then with NBC and TNT in 2001. He received an ESPN Emmy in 1996, and the ACE Award in 1989.

    Day 13 - 1972 STP Set (Card 11 of 11)
1972 STP Richard Petty (July 2, 1937 to Present)
    NASCAR Sprint Cup Statistics
Raced 35 years in 1184 races with 200 Wins, 555 Top Fives, 712 Top Tens and 123 starting at the Pole.

NASCARD RADIO.COM take away: This is the first card of "The King". He raced 35 years (1958 - 1992) and was the 1959 Rookie of the Year. 46.9% pecent of the time he finished in the top 5. Number one in all time wins with 200 races. He has 95 more wins than the number two all time winner. He won the championship 7 times and came in second 6 times. He was one of the first five inducted in to the NASCAR Hall of Fame (2010) and named one of the 50 Greatest NASCAR Drivers of All Time.

With all these accomplishments he is the nicest guy you will ever meet. He signs for free or for a small donation that goes to fund some charities (Victory Junction Gang Camp). His full signature is a work of art and then he changed it to just "R Petty". He changed it back so I asked him one time why he changed it back and he said to spend more time with the fans. Ask one of the premiere baseball or football guys if they would do that!

    Day 14 - 1983 UNO Set (Card 1 of 30)

11 Years after the 1972 STP set the second NASCAR set was produced. Very little is known about the 1983 UNO set.

I can tell you that David Chobat helped produce the set for UNO. David Chobat was a professional motorsports photographer. This 30 card set is limited and not much is known about when and where it was given out or sold in 1983. In the October 1991 edition of "Collectors World" the set was reveled to the collecting world with a full page article and a centerfold of the entire set. This set has multiple cards of Tim Richmond, Buddy Baker and Kyle Petty as well as the first cards of Dale Earnhardt and Darrell Waltrip.

    Card #1 is Tim Richmond (June 7, 1955 - August 13, 1989) Age 34

    NASCAR Sprint Cup Statistics
Raced 8 years in 185 races with 13 Wins, 42 Top Fives, 78 Top Tens and 14 starting at the Pole.

NASCARD RADIO.COM take away: More to come on Tim Richmond.

    Day 15 - 1983 UNO Set (Card 2 of 30)

    Crad #2 Neil Bonnett (July 30, 1946 - February 11, 1994) Age 47

    NASCAR Sprint Cup Statistics
Raced 18 years in 362 races with 18 Wins, 83 Top Fives, 156 Top Tens and 20 starting at the Pole.

NASCARD RADIO.COM take away: He raced from 1974 - 1993. Neil Bonnett was named one of NASCAR's 50 Greatest Drivers. He was part of the "Alabama Gang" that included himself, Red Farmer and the Allison family: father Bobby, brother Donnie and, later, son Davey.

On February 11, 1994, during the first practice session for the 1994 Daytona 500, Bonnett's car suffered a right front tire failure in the track's fourth turn. Bonnett's car hit the outside wall nearly head-on. Bonnett was taken to nearby Halifax Medical Center, but he had died on impact. He is buried in Pleasant Grove's cemetery, Forest Grove Memorial Gardens.

A road called "Allison-Bonnett Memorial Drive" in his hometown honors him, along with fellow native Davey Allison, who died a year earlier.

When Brad Keselowski scored Phoenix Racing's first Sprint Cup win 15 years later at the 2009 Aaron's 499, Finch dedicated the win to Bonnett.

    Love this thread.
I started collecting he Maxx sets and then stopped nascar in the mid 90's.
I remember bonnett so well. He was a class act. Remember the day davey went down. As a huge Bobby fan I felt so terrible for him and racing fans.

btw...on TV there has been a series of nascar HOF episodes about the top drivers. Last night I saw Darrell Waltrip for the first tie.
That was just after Glen wood. I have seen the Cale yarborough episode.

Does anyone know where I could obtain signed 8x10's of the great hof drivers?

Those UNO cards are pretty cool. I picked up the dale earnhardt UNO card and got it slabbed. Any idea how these were distributed or how rare they are? It seems like the 86 cards sell for more but I decided to pick up the UNO card for my rookie card collection.

    Day 19 - 1983 UNO Set (Card 6 of 30)

    Card #6 is Tim Richmond (June 7, 1955 - August 13, 1989) Age 34

    NASCAR Sprint Cup Statistics
Raced 8 years in 185 races with 13 Wins, 42 Top Fives, 78 Top Tens and 14 starting at the Pole.

NASCARD RADIO.COM take away:In the 1980 INDY 500 he drove the #21 UNO car. He was friends with Bob Tezak who owned the UNO card game. Now you know why Tim is on so many 1983 UNO cards.

Tim Richmond was born in Ashland, Ohio and, unlike many other NASCAR drivers, was born into wealth and didn't grow up with auto racing. He didn't even begin racing until the age of 21, when he drove a Sprint car owned by a friend, but he knew instantly that it was to become his vocation.

Tim Richmond was a perennial playboy. Growing up in wealth, he always appreciated the best things and was very flamboyant especially in comparison to the other gruff, working-class drivers of the time like Dale Earnhardt, Richard Petty and Cale Yarborough. Richmond had expensive tastes in food and drink and lived a fast lifestyle that mirrored his on-track performances.

He continued on the open-wheel racing circuits, racing in the 1980 Indianapolis 500. After crashing during the first day of qualifying for the 1980 Indianapolis 500, Richmond nevertheless obtained the 19th starting position in the race. He worked his way up to the top 10 during the race, led a lap, and finished ninth as he ran out of fuel at the end of the race. To the delight of the crowd, winner Johnny Rutherford gave him a ride back to the pits. He was named the 1980 Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year.

"I busted up a few Indy cars right after that," he said. "Milwaukee, Mid-Ohio. . . at Michigan I cut one in two. I was afraid my racing career would come to a halt. So when I got an offer to drive stock cars, I took it, and it turned out I liked driving them better."

He (After a few bad crashes in open wheel his mom put her foot down) decided to move on into stock car racing in NASCAR, which is where he spent the rest of his racing days. His first few seasons, he bounced from team to team looking for a permanent ride which he found in 1982. He raced in 26 events, winning twice and finishing in the top 5 seven times, but only finished 26th in the Winston Cup points standings.

It has been said that the role of tim richmond was played by Tom Cryuse in days of thunder.

I enjoyed watching his carear and believe I saw his last win.

I remember when he died it brought a big scare to the nsacar community. He died of aids...and was known to "really get around," and had quite a few of the other fellas worried
as they might have been with the same groupies.

Thanks for info on autos.....but looking not for the newer guys but like..... pearson & waltrip .....from even before them.

    Richmonds talent was unquestionable.

RacingHeroes has a lot of stuff of all drivers. I picked up a signed 1992 Maxx Texaco Davey Allison from him at a show in Charlotte he was also buying older stuff. You can also check ebay.

I sent some 1989 Winners Circle cards to David Pearson (#2 all time wins @105) and he signed them. If there is someone special you are looking for let me know who and reply here or send me a PM and I will see what I can do. These guys sign TTM also.

    DAYS OF THUNDER:
The part with the tire test and gearbox problems but still won the race were all Tim Richmond but the Ice cream and telling him to hit the pace car that was all Benny Parsons. Both occured under crew chief Harry Hyde who inspored the character Harry Hogge in the movie Days of Thunder.

Pocono Raceway owner and founder Dr. Joseph Mattioli convinced Richmond to make the change to stock car racing on the NASCAR circuit. Richmond made his first NASCAR start two months after winning the Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year award. He debuted at the Coca-Cola 500 Pocono on July 27, 1980, finishing 12th in a D. K. Ulrich-owned Chevrolet. That season, he competed in five events, with two DNFs (did not finish) and three 12th place finishes. Overall, he finished the 1980 season 41st in points.

Richmond raced for three teams in 1981. He started the season by competing in 15 events for Ulrich. He had his first career top 10 finish, taking sixth place at Talladega Superspeedway, soon followed by a seventh place finish at Texas World Speedway. After Kennie Childers hired him away from Ulrich mid-season, Richmond had top 10 finishes at Pocono and Bristol. For the final seven races of the season, he drove for Bob Rogers and had a top 10 finish at Dover International Speedway. Overall for the season, Richmond had six top 10 finishes to place 16th in season points.

Richmond started 1982 without a ride before getting a one-race deal to drive for Billie Harvey at the Rockingham track. Richmond completed 112 laps of the 492-lap event to finish 31st, retiring from the race with engine problems. For the following event, Richmond was hired to drive J.D. Stacy's #2 car. In his first race for the team, Richmond earned his first career top 5 finish when he placed fifth at Darlington Raceway. Returning to Pocono, he finished second, before winning his first race on the road course at Riverside, California the following week. Later that season, he earned his first pole position at Bristol. The tour returned to Riverside for the final race of the season where Richmond won his second race, sweeping both events at the track. Benny Parsons said that "watching Richmond go through the Esses was unbelievable". For the season, Richmond had twelve top 10s, two wins, and one pole to finish 26th in points.

In 1983, Richmond began racing for Raymond Beadle whom he had known before he started racing. He returned to the three-cornered Pocono racetrack, earning his first oval victory. During the season, he accumulated four pole positions (Darlington, Pocono, Charlotte, and Atlanta), one win (Pocono), and fifteen top 10s on his way to finishing tenth in season points. He made his first appearance in a NASCAR Busch Series (now Nationwide Series) car, but did not finish any of the three races he entered that season. He was also in the 1983 film 'Stroker Ace'.

Esquire magazine named Richmond as one of "the best of the new generation" in 1984. That year he had one win at North Wilkesboro Speedway and second place finishes at Dover, Darlington and Riverside. Richmond finished the 1984 season 12th in points, with 11 finishes in the top 10 and in six in the top 5. In the Busch Series, he qualified at the pole position in the two races he entered, and won the Charlotte race. Wikipedia Article
