FINAL UPDATE: Charmy's LAS VEGAS PALACE STATION Show Report w/Pics of Course!

This show is at the Palace Station this year because the Plaza Casino on Fremont Street where the show usually occurs is being renovated. But let me just say that this is one of my favorite shows that I attend each year - first, it's a coin show, which I love, and second, it's in Las Vegas which I also love! I'm so happy I get the best of both worlds setting up here!
The show is pretty good sized - probably 100+ tables, very roomy...
Here are photos of Sandy and John Guild - the wonderful hardworking show promoters....
Yesterday was set up day, lots of dealer to dealer interaction. After everything is all set up, I kick back, open my bottle of 7 Deadly Zins, and relax for a few minutes.
One of the "vest pocket dealers" stopped by, so we shared a little wine - yes, I am careful not to drink much while conducting business - actually, I like to offer my customers wine while I sell them some nice coins since the coins tend to look even prettier after a couple glasses of wine! - just kidding!! I did buy a few nice pieces including a great 1867/67 PCGS XF45, one of my favorite repunched dates since the repunching is so bold. Also bought a very nice 1914-S PCGS MS64 RB which is one of the harder Lincolns to find in this grade.
Then Roger/MustangGT (Todd/blue62vette' dad) shows up, he was in town on business and I had arranged for him to "help" me at my table. He has to wear a badge to be behind a table, so I got a kick out of this silver dollar guy being called "The Penny Lady" and just had to take a photo of his cute badge....
Towards the end of the show I took a walk around to see what I could find, and took a few photos of some of the "regulars" that I often see at my shows.
David
Dawn (where I usually buy pretty jewelry that I can't live without)
You may recognize these two....
Glen Holsonbake/PonyExpress and Bruce Braga
And these two....
Mike/Illini and Raul/Mr. Organic
Then it was off to the casino. I'm staying at the Rio, not far from the Palace Station. So I valet my car, walk over to the entrance towing my roller bag and pillow behind me when I see a folded $20 bill on the ground, which of course I pick up. My hands are full so I wait til I get into the casino to stop and check it out. And what do you know, there's another $20 bill folded in with it! So what a way to start off my gambling - free money! Here's my lucky money...
I ended up playing in a poker tournament at the Rio, only came in 5th so I didn't finish in the money.
Today was extremely active, I'm selling mostly raw coins to collectors, and a few pretty slabbed red Lincolns. Rick Snow is also set up here (I'll have to tell you a funny story how that came about later!)
Tonight we're headed downtown to Fremont Street, and will probably play more poker and watch the hourly light/music show. Sometimes they even have some live bands playing down there. But the best thing is they have these very tall wonderful slushy drinks "to go." My favorite is the banana flavored one that tastes like a banana popsicle, only these have 151 rum in them - ummmmmmmmmmmmmm!

<< <i>Looks like a ghost town, where is everyone? Looks like you could shoot a cannon in there and be pretty safe from hitting anyone. >>
That was set up day with only dealers in attendance, no public til today - so of course the bourse will look sparse.

I suggest parking in the open lot and not the garage there.

Yes, and a joy they are! Very nice, fun people. Wish all my coin neighbors were like them.
And Pakasmom, I LOVE Mai tais and would love to come to Hawaii to meet you and do a show there - I keep trying but the November show seems to conflict with others on my schedule.
Palace Station doesn't seem that "seedy" at all, and it's even easier to get to and park than the Plaza (though I really like having the show at the Plaza since it's on Fremont Street). We found out they are holding the show here again at Palace Station next year, March 2-4, 2012.
Yesterday was quite busy and full of people - from talking to other dealers, much of their business was from bullion buyers and sellers. As I mentioned, I sold several nice red Lincolns and also picked up a beautiful 1868 Indian NGC MS65 Red and another 1955/55 Double Die in PCGS AU58.
So last night we ended up staying around the Rio instead of going to Fremont Street. Rick and I entered the poker tournament at the Rio, and it didn't take me too long to go all in and be beat by trip Kings, Rick ended up winning the tournament ($600)! I ended up playing 3 card poker, got trips and won quite a bit. Also played some Black Jack and Ultimate Texas Hold-Um and won even more. Here's a pic of my winnings from yesterday! Whawhooo!
I have a beautiful corner room at the Rio so I took a some pics of my room and the views from my two windows at night - north and west Las Vegas - just gorgeous.
The show this morning is pretty crowded already.
Paul/jmcu12 already stopped by this morning and took a peak at several of my errors. From chatting with him, he must have an amazing error collection.
Well, got to help some customers, so will post more later!

I appreciate good taste and I have expectations, so no.
Besides, I prefer places I can feel comfortable walking around in broad daylight without the need to carry a shotgun for protection.

One of my bigger hauls:
My chip ranking was 4th out of 6 players with about $7K in chips. I had a K-6 and I raised the $200 big blind to $2000 to see if I could steal the blinds. Four people called. The flop was no help and every one checked. On the turn, one guy went all in ($1500) and I called with my K-high. Sweating on that call. There was one other person in the hand and she called too. On the river, I got nothing, so I'm sitting with a K-high with lots of my money in the pot. So I bet $3000 and the third person folded. Whew! I won the hand because the all-in was shooting blanks. The third player who folded was very mad because she had a pair. Unfortunately I had to show my bluff hand because of the all-in.
(these were tourney chips, not real money)
As you can see I've been selling lots of coins at the show.

We had a great last-night hurrah, starting with playing poker here at the Palace Station with Rick and Glenn. We also met a very nice Air Force Lt. Colonel who ended up joining us and Bruce Braga for dinner at the wonderful Binions Steak House. We then walked around Fremont Street and watched the fantastic light show which played several great Doors songs. I tried to capture some of the light show overhead and the photos turned out sort of psychedelic looking!
The entire atmosphere on Fremont Street is like Mardi Gras, with tons of people wondering around, partying, dancing, gathering Mardi Gras beads from the cute girls outside the casinos, etc. It was a lot of fun, that's for sure! Glenn and I also enjoyed these very yummy but quite potent slushy drinks in these large football shaped holders. Mine was banana flavored with 151 rum and Glenn's was watermelon flavored and just as potent!
We even discovered that "Elvis was in the building" and I took a quick pic of him when he wasn't looking (otherwise, I understand he may have charged me to take his photo!)
Then we headed into Binions for some more poker. It was a very friendly low limit game which was good since we were enjoying our football drinks and weren't as sharp as we normally would have been in a higher limit game! We ended up playing for several hours and finally crept back to our hotel in the wee hours of the morning!
So I woke up a little blurry eyed this morning, but the view from my room showed a beautiful and stunning day which perked me right up (not to mention the bright sun was quite an eye opener as well)! Here are some pretty pics of the daytime city from my room.
So that's it for this show folks. Next report will probably be from the Sacramento ANA....
p.s. Don't forget for those of you in California that Huell Howser's segment on the Long Beach show "Visiting with Huell Howser" (which includes his interview with lil ol me!) airs tomorrow night (Monday, March 7) and March 17 at 7pm on KCET.

I agree. (I heard that Glenn refused to take his shirt off.)

Hey, as yummy as it was, I don't think even I could handle drinking two of those drinks and still be standing! Glen had to hold mine while I took his photo and vice versa.

Man... For those of you who never visited Fremont Street in downtown Vegas. It's one of the best places to be. Very close to the Stratosphere where I last stayed, and those rides atop the tower are just insane. Check it out when you get a chance.
Dave
A trip like that sure sounds like a blast!

<< <i>Well, here it is the last day, I'm a bit tired, but had a great time here in Vegas. As I said, the show has been busy but ended up being more of a bullion show so I haven't sold as much as I usually do here. I've actually sold a lot of little things out of my "junk" box - that seems to be very popular. So I'll pack up in a couple hours and head out for that long drive back home but look forward to finishing my very interesting James Patterson's book on cd.

Hmm....them drinks sure do look good. I likes a two-fisted drinker
Thanks for the report. I haven't been to Vegas since the summer of 1991. Would love to go back and see if I could do as well as I did then.

<< <i>Often people here ask why PCGS hosts shows in Las Vegas and not somewhere in the heart of the rust belt in the middle part of the country. These photos courtesy of The Penny Lady should explain why. >>
If you believe the rust belt is in the middle part of the country... and all of this coming from a Barrel of Fun.
Nice report as always, Charmy. Thank you for taking us along for the ride!

Any place east of Las Vegas and more than about 60 miles west of the Atlantic Ocean coast (including all coastal areas along the Gulf of Mexico west of St. Petersburg) qualifies as middle of the country.
Anyhow, PCGS schedules their shows based on demand. If there was more interest for a show in Missouri there would be one.

What? You do not think that we drink fruity colored drinks out of boob-shaped plastic cups in the Midwest?
You are right!
