Jefferson 1941-S attribution problem, need some help?

I need a few opinions on these two coins. They are both supposed to be the same variety. I'm seeing two different mint marks, do you? The mint mark in the larger picture is not in the same location as the smaller one. These are both graded by PCGS and are supposed to be the 1941-S Inverted S (FS-24.6). The smaller picture is my example and the larger one is on ebay tonight. Notice how the 'S' in the larger picture does not tuck into the building like the smaller one. Also, the 'S' actually hangs over the side steps, where the smaller one does not.

Compare the large picture to this one.

I afraid we now have two different mint marks being designated as the Inverted S. This is very sad for us Jefferson Collectors. If I am correct in my analysis of these two coins, I know PCGS will never correct the situation. This would be a sad trend for incorrect attributions. Another attribution error that has not been correct is the 1938 QDO (FS-21.5) where there is a similar quadrupling in ‘LIBERT’, but also has a doubled profile. To me, the regular profile is a different variety than the double profile. These would so easy to correct, given there are only a handful graded.

Your thoughts are greatly appreciated.

No definitive answer purse, but with a variety as such, a 10X loupe (at least for me) is needed along with a regular "S" and the potential inverted "S" mint marks. Being able to "wink" back and forth between the two, makes a pretty good indicator of exactly what is there.

I would not surrender a judgment viewing some images, hopefully someone who has also experienced these indicators can straighten this mess out.

    Good luck

    Let's try this comparison.

Now what do you think? Two different mint marks?

Yes, two different positions of the mint marks. The reverse die maybe the same and the mint mark letter die maybe the same, but the positioning of the MM is different. How this relates to the variety listing I'm not quite sure, but are you 100% sure the e-bay coin is labeled as such?

The last one I had looked like the one on the right.

    WoodenJefferson,

Yes the coin on the left sold on ebay last night for $150. I almost bid just to return to PCGS, I wish I did. It was in a PCGS attributed holder, MS65 Inverted MM FS-503 (FS-24.6). A few months back, several of this variety hit the pops, a couple MS64s and MS65s. My guess is they all were from the same roll and probably the same incorrect mint mark. There goes the Pops again!

You would have had to done a physical in hand comparison to be absolutely sure the S was inverted on the the e-bay coin. If someone sent a few in under the attribution level, could it be possible to get one that is not inverted passed the grader? Is this a mechanical error? A new variety? So many questions will go unanswered...keep your eyes open for another one like the e-bay coin.

I guess if you only ask for a few opinions, that's all you'll get?
  • I can assure everyone here that it is NOT a Inv. MM

Sorry... I've been gone most of the day...

IMHO, it's not an inverted mm.
